Corfu Airport Sees Record 1,704 Aircraft Arrivals in May, Connecting to 31 Countries
Corfu, Greece, June 2, 2026 – Corfu’s ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Airport has reported a remarkable increase in air traffic for May 2026, with a total of 1,704 aircraft arrivals. This influx connects the island to 103 airports across 31 countries in Europe and the Middle East, signaling a robust start to the 2026 tourism season.
Positive Trends Continue from March to May
The positive developments in air tourism have been evident since the beginning of the 2026 tourist season. Data from Fraport, the airport operator, indicates a continuous upward trajectory in passenger arrivals and departures from March to April. These figures surpass those of 2025, which was a record year for passenger traffic.
While official Fraport data for May is yet to be published, observations from Flightradar24 confirm the positive trend for the past month. The last week of May alone saw 933 aircraft landings and take-offs, with these numbers expected to climb even higher in the coming period.
Key Origin Countries and Airlines
The majority of international flights originated from the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, France, and the Netherlands. There was also a notable presence from Israel, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, and Dubai.
Leading airlines contributing to this surge include Ryanair, Easyjet, Tui, Jet2, Transavia, Austria, Volotea, Brussels, Eurowings, Condor, Lufthansa, Edelweiss, Israir, and Smartwings. These airlines operated a diverse fleet, including aircraft types such as EMB, A319, A320, A321, and B737.
Overcoming Geopolitical Challenges
Earlier concerns regarding the situation in the Middle East had raised fears of negative impacts on the aviation sector, particularly concerning potential jet fuel shortages and increased fares. Major European airlines had even considered the possibility of company closures and a devastating impact on the entire European tourism season.
However, these scenarios have gradually shifted. Airlines have adapted their strategies, and a primary objective – ensuring sufficient aviation fuel reserves – has now been achieved. Consequently, fears for this summer have largely dissipated, as confirmed by official announcements from airline boards.
The sustained growth in air traffic underscores Corfu’s enduring appeal as a premier tourist destination and highlights the resilience of the aviation and tourism industries in the face of global challenges.
