Corfu Airport Sees 225% Surge in International Arrivals for March 2026

Corfu, Greece – Corfu’s ‘I. Kapodistrias’ Airport has reported a substantial 225.10% increase in international passenger arrivals for March 2026, welcoming 9,854 travelers compared to 3,031 in March 2025. This impressive growth, amidst ongoing global geopolitical challenges, sets an optimistic tone for the island’s tourism sector.

Strong Start to the Tourism Season

Following a successful 2025 season that saw a 6.13% annual increase in international arrivals, reaching 2,080,517 despite a challenging international climate, the current trend in March 2026 indicates a robust start. This surge is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has created a new series of negative consequences for the global economy and the lives of people worldwide.

The positive figures suggest a potential ‘favorable parameter’ for destinations located far from conflict zones, offering a clear safety advantage over competitors in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf. However, local authorities and stakeholders are urged to avoid complacency.

Challenges and Concerns Amidst Growth

The article highlights that the tragic consequences of the ongoing conflicts continue to affect the economic, energy, and psychological well-being of European citizens. When combined with the repercussions of the Ukrainian war and the impending mandatory NATO rearmament of European countries, which will relegate policies aimed at improving living standards to a secondary position, the problems are not merely escalating; they are becoming nightmarish.

Corfu, known as the ‘Island of Culture and Tourism,’ has entered this new tourist period with major unresolved infrastructure and service issues, exacerbated by last year’s natural disasters and years of neglect. The daily life and living standards of its permanent residents are reportedly deteriorating.

Corfu’s Tourism Landscape

With approximately 102,000 inhabitants, Corfu annually hosts over 3 million visitors, marking one of the highest visitor-to-resident ratios. The majority of these arrivals occur during the four-month period from June to September. In 2025, international arrivals during this peak period accounted for 76.74% of the total 2,080,500 arrivals at the airport.

The article points out the significant strain on the island’s infrastructure, particularly in Corfu Town’s historic center during peak months. The airport arrivals are compounded by hundreds of thousands of cruise ship visitors, thousands from marine tourism, thousands of domestic tourists traveling by car and bus, and an estimated 70,000 rental cars. This leads to considerable inconvenience for visitors trying to reach the city and find parking, navigating a road network described as ‘third-world’ with temporary, single-use repairs.

Official Perspectives and Local Discontent

At a Central Corfu Municipality workshop on January 28, which assessed the 2025 tourism season, various officials and stakeholders praised Corfu and its achievements, ultimately identifying public infrastructure and services as the major challenge. However, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms. Anna Karamanli, reportedly held a different view, stating that Corfu possesses ‘infrastructure in excellent condition.’ The article sarcastically questions this assertion, listing deficiencies in water supply, road networks, parking, healthcare, waste management, and lighting.

Despite these concerns, a survey conducted at the airport indicated that 92% of visitors leave the island fully satisfied, leading the author to lament the local tendency to complain.

Strategic Adjustments for Sustainable Tourism

While there are positive indications for this year’s tourism, a cautious optimism is advised. Tourism remains highly vulnerable to factors that create travel concerns, ranging from geopolitical uncertainties to economic instabilities.

Corfu’s tourism sector, amidst fierce competition in the Mediterranean basin, requires a strategic approach and rapid tactical readjustments based on the evolving international tourism environment. This environment is characterized by rapid changes, especially in the profile of potential visitors. In this context, there is a need for:

  • A change in destination management during the peak season.
  • Immediate initiatives from competent local political, self-governing, and tourism bodies.
  • Modernization of infrastructure and services.
  • Functional modernization of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP).
  • Enrichment of the tourism product with special forms of tourism.
  • Policies for sustainable tourism development.
