Corfu, April 22 – Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport in Corfu has reported a remarkable 225.1% surge in passenger traffic for March 2026, compared to the same month last year. This significant increase underscores a positive outlook for the island’s tourism sector as the summer season approaches.

Record-Breaking March for Corfu Airport

According to official data, passenger arrivals at Corfu Airport reached 9,854 in March 2026, a substantial rise from the 3,031 recorded in March 2025. The majority of these visitors originated from the United Kingdom and Germany, with arrivals from the UK increasing by 314.08% to 5,764 passengers, and German arrivals climbing by 130.20% to 1,128 passengers, both compared to March 2025 figures.

This impressive performance is seen as a strong indicator for the forthcoming summer tourist season, offering optimism despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East.

Ionian Airports Show Collective Growth

The positive trend extends beyond Corfu, with the four main airports of the Ionian Islands-Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and Aktio-collectively reporting a 206.93% increase in international arrivals for March 2026. A total of 10,666 passengers arrived at these airports, up from 3,475 in March 2025.

A breakdown of arrivals for March 2026 at the Ionian airports is as follows:

  • Corfu: 9,854 passengers
  • Kefalonia: 175 passengers
  • Zakynthos: 441 passengers
  • Aktio: 196 passengers

Implications for the Summer Season

The robust growth in March is particularly noteworthy as it precedes the peak tourist season. Industry experts suggest that if this momentum continues, the Ionian Islands, and Corfu in particular, could anticipate one of their strongest tourist seasons yet. The increased connectivity and sustained interest from key European markets like the UK and Germany are crucial factors contributing to this optimistic forecast.

Local tourism stakeholders express cautious optimism, emphasizing the need to maintain high service standards and further enhance the visitor experience to capitalize on this positive trend. The strong start to the year provides a much-needed boost to the local economy, which heavily relies on tourism.
