Corfu Airport Sets New Record: Over 2 Million International Arrivals in 2025

Corfu, January 22, 2026 – ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Airport in Corfu concluded 2025 with an unprecedented number of international arrivals, reaching a historic 2,080,517. This figure marks a substantial 6.13% increase, or 120,320 additional arrivals, compared to 2024, solidifying Corfu’s position as a leading tourist destination.

The year 2025 unfolded within a challenging international environment characterized by constant uncertainties and shifts. Despite these global dynamics, Corfu’s tourism sector demonstrated remarkable adaptability and resilience, contributing to this record-breaking performance.

Key Figures and Market Breakdown

An in-depth analysis of last year’s traffic reveals several interesting data points that warrant further attention from tourism stakeholders:

  • First Quarter Arrivals: 3,063, representing 0.14% of annual traffic.
  • First Four Months Arrivals: 82,525, accounting for 3.96% of annual traffic.
  • High Season (June-August) Arrivals: 1,253,282, making up 60.23% of annual traffic.
  • June-September Arrivals: 1,596,741, or 76.74% of annual traffic.

The top five source markets for Corfu’s tourism in 2025 were:

  1. United Kingdom: 754,316 arrivals, a 3.28% increase from 2024.
  2. Germany: 382,102 arrivals, a 12.37% increase.
  3. Italy: 171,620 arrivals, a 5.15% decrease.
  4. Poland: 150,158 arrivals, a 13.93% increase.
  5. France: 126,144 arrivals, a 14.25% increase.

These five markets collectively accounted for 1,584,340 arrivals, representing 76.15% of the total annual traffic. The UK market maintained its dominant position, contributing 36.25% of the total annual arrivals and 47.61% of the top five markets’ share.

Other notable market performances include:

  • Scandinavian Countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland): 34,833 arrivals, a 26.30% increase, with Sweden showing a remarkable 63.59% growth (17,203 arrivals in 2025 vs. 10,516 in 2024).
  • Israel: 42,043 arrivals, a 29.52% decrease (17,617 fewer passengers) compared to 2024, attributed to known reasons.
  • Emerging Markets: Romania (36,656 arrivals, +30.54%), Switzerland (35,946 arrivals, +19.91%), Hungary (33,270 arrivals, -10.36%), and Slovakia (24,017 arrivals, +32.25%).

Challenges and the Need for Strategic Planning

Despite the successful year in terms of arrivals and increased tourism revenue, as indicated by Bank of Greece data, questions remain regarding the equitable distribution of economic benefits among all tourism stakeholders. The article highlights that while some businesses thrive, others face challenges, leading to varied financial outcomes across the sector.

Several underlying issues continue to plague Corfu’s tourism:

  • Foreign and Non-Local Ownership: A growing number of tourism businesses, including restaurants, supermarkets, car rentals, and accommodation, are now owned by foreign entities or Greeks with no direct ties to the island.
  • All-Inclusive Packages: Luxury 4- and 5-star hotels, often operated by multinational corporations, predominantly offer all-inclusive packages. This model significantly limits the financial benefits trickling down to the local market and economy, despite hundreds of thousands of visitors.
  • Airbnb’s Role: The much-criticized Airbnb model is noted for injecting direct cash into the local economy, often providing financial relief to households and pensioners struggling with rising costs, energy bills, and stagnant wages.

The Picture Behind the Numbers

The data also underscores critical observations:

  1. Seasonality: The idea of extending the tourist season remains largely a distant dream. With 60.23% of annual arrivals concentrated in the three high-season months (June-August), Corfu’s tourism product heavily relies on the traditional “sea, sun, and sand” model.
  2. Market Concentration: The reliance on five main markets for 76.15% of annual traffic, with one market (UK) accounting for 36.25%, poses a vulnerability in an ever-changing international landscape marked by various social, economic, and cultural crises.
  3. Persistent Infrastructure Issues: Corfu enters each new season grappling with long-standing major problems, primarily affecting its permanent residents and degrading their daily lives. Public infrastructure and services often fail to meet basic standards for both residents and visitors.

Local authorities and government representatives have often downplayed these issues, attributing them to a centralized state. However, the article argues that this perspective overlooks Corfu’s own failure to effectively advocate for its needs and to develop a sustainable tourism strategy. The current unbridled tourism development in the island’s periphery, which often distorts the character of traditional settlements and strains natural resources like water, undermines the long-term sustainability of the tourism product.

G. Mavronas, former President of Ergatiko Ypato Kerkyras, emphasizes the urgent need for a well-organized, sustainable tourism development plan that respects Corfu’s architectural and natural environment, as well as its social, cultural, and historical heritage. Such a plan, he suggests, must address both current needs and future challenges and opportunities.
