Corfu Braces for Significant Cold and Strong Winds
Corfu, January 12 – The island of Corfu is set to experience a period of notably cold weather in the coming hours, as the low-pressure system that brought severe weather conditions to the region begins to recede. The forecast indicates a significant drop in temperatures and strong winds, with a gradual improvement expected towards the end of the week.
Detailed Weather Outlook for the Coming Days
On Monday, residents can expect sunshine, but northwesterly winds will persist, with gusts reaching up to 6 to 7 Beaufort locally. These winds are anticipated to weaken by the evening, settling at 3 to 4 Beaufort from northern and northeastern directions. Temperatures will remain exceptionally low, with daytime highs not exceeding 7°C. The minimum temperature is forecast to be between 3 and 4°C, dropping to as low as -1°C in areas away from the coast and at higher altitudes. Due to these low temperatures, frost is also expected. Humidity levels will be low during the day, rising to 61% by night.
By Tuesday, a gradual increase in temperature is predicted, accompanied by sunshine. This change is due to high-pressure systems beginning to influence the region, originating from a dominant high-pressure area over North Africa. Winds will be light, blowing from various directions at up to 3 Beaufort locally. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 12°C, with a minimum of 8°C. Humidity will remain low during the day, increasing to 83% in the evening.
From Wednesday onwards, both maximum and minimum temperatures will see a further rise, again attributed to the high-pressure systems from North Africa. Daytime highs are projected to reach 16°C from Thursday. According to the latest forecasts, there is a possibility of light rainfall between Thursday and Friday, though no severe weather phenomena are anticipated.
Impact of the Weather on the Island
The cold front follows a period of intense weather conditions, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the low temperatures and potential frost. The strong winds may also affect maritime activities, though an easing is expected by Monday evening.
The gradual warming trend towards the end of the week will bring more stable and milder conditions, providing a respite from the current cold snap. Authorities have not issued any specific warnings beyond general advice for cold weather, but residents are encouraged to stay informed through local weather updates.
The weather patterns observed are typical for this time of year, with the interplay of low and high-pressure systems bringing fluctuations in temperature and wind conditions across the Ionian Islands.
