Cocaine-Laced Shoes Trip Athens Drug Gang, Leading to Major Arrests and Seizures
Athens, May 24 – The arrest of a man at an Athens long-distance bus station, found with a pair of shoes concealing cocaine, has led to the dismantling of a major drug trafficking gang. Police announced on Sunday that the operation, directed by a convict, involved large quantities of illicit substances.
Police Crackdown Follows Tip-Off
The extensive police operation commenced on Friday, May 22, following a crucial tip-off. This led to three arrests within the Greater Athens region and the confiscation of significant amounts of drugs, including 10.5 kilograms of heroin, 2.2 kilograms of cocaine, and smaller quantities of marijuana and ecstasy.
The Cocaine-Laced Shoes: A Key Breakthrough
The initial breakthrough occurred when officers detained a 71-year-old man. He was attempting to dispatch a package containing the suspicious shoes, which had 20 grams of cocaine hidden inside, via bus to an undisclosed destination outside Athens. Investigations revealed that the man had received the drugs from a 58-year-old individual. This 58-year-old, in turn, was working on behalf of a third man currently serving a prison sentence in Greece for unspecified offenses, according to a police statement.
Further Arrests and Seizures
In addition to these arrests, police also apprehended a 52-year-old woman. She is suspected of being involved in storing and adulterating the illicit drugs. Alongside the narcotics, authorities discovered and seized substantial sums of cash. This included various international currencies such as Thai, Korean, Chinese, Argentinian, Sri Lankan, and Emirati currency, indicating the wide-reaching nature of the gang’s operations.
Estimated Street Value and Financial Impact
Police have estimated the combined street value of the confiscated drugs and the total value of the seized cash to be approximately €339,000. This significant figure underscores the scale of the drug trafficking enterprise that has been disrupted.
Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking
This successful operation highlights the ongoing efforts by Greek authorities to combat drug trafficking within the country. Recent news reports have detailed similar crackdowns, including a large drug seizure following a car chase, the confiscation of nearly 50 kg of cocaine at Piraeus port, and the dismantling of marijuana-trafficking rings across various cities in Greece. The police continue to work diligently to identify and prosecute individuals involved in the illegal drug trade, aiming to reduce the availability of narcotics and enhance public safety.
The unravelling of this particular gang, initiated by the seemingly small discovery of cocaine-laced shoes, demonstrates the intricate and often unexpected ways in which law enforcement can uncover and dismantle sophisticated criminal networks. The collaboration between various police units and the effective use of intelligence were crucial to the success of this operation.
Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the identity of the convict directing the gang or the specific charges that will be brought against the arrested individuals. However, the successful conclusion of this operation marks a significant victory in the fight against organized crime in Athens and the wider region.
The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking to the police, as community cooperation plays a vital role in these ongoing efforts.
