In a concerted effort to maintain cleanliness and uphold its Cleaning Regulation, the Cleaning and Recycling Department of the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality has recently issued a series of new fines. A total of 14 penalties were imposed for various infractions related to waste management.
Details of the Fines Imposed
The fines, totaling 14, were distributed as follows:
- Ten fines for vehicles parked in front of bins, each carrying a penalty of 200 euros.
- Two fines for placing bulky items on sidewalks or public spaces, each penalized with 300 euros.
- One fine for disposing of waste outside designated bins, incurring a 100 euro penalty.
- One fine for businesses and establishments failing to minimize or compress their waste before disposal, resulting in a 400 euro fine.
These measures underscore the municipality’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and fostering a more responsible approach to waste management among residents and businesses.
Reminders from the Cleaning Department
The Department reiterates that certain actions are strictly prohibited to ensure public hygiene and order. These include:
- Depositing waste outside designated bins.
- Parking vehicles in front of waste bins, obstructing access.
- Placing bulky items in public spaces.
- Failing to compress or minimize waste before disposal.
These rules are in place to facilitate efficient waste collection and maintain the aesthetic appeal of the island.
Promoting Environmental Consciousness
The primary objective behind these fines is not punitive, but rather to cultivate a sense of responsibility and adherence to simple rules that contribute to keeping the city clean and functional. The municipality emphasizes that collective effort is crucial for preserving Corfu’s unique beauty.
Small Green Point for Proper Waste Disposal
Citizens are also encouraged to utilize the Small Green Point located on Eptanisou Street (Tria Gefyria) for the proper disposal of recyclable materials and bulky items. This facility operates from Monday to Saturday, from 08:30 to 15:00, excluding public holidays, providing a convenient and environmentally sound option for waste management.
Call for Citizen Responsibility
The Municipality urges all citizens to demonstrate responsibility and respect for their community, thereby contributing to the preservation of Corfu’s unparalleled natural and urban beauty. By working together, residents and the local government can ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more attractive environment for everyone.
