North Corfu Municipal Council Meeting: Teachers Allege Bullying and Intimidation by Authorities

Corfu, Greece – A recent session of the North Corfu Municipal Council, held on Friday, January 23, 2026, erupted into a heated confrontation, with teachers and school directors accusing municipal authorities of bullying and intimidation. The educators, who were invited by the Mayor himself to present school-related problems, found themselves on the receiving end of what they describe as an “abusive attack” that extended beyond the bounds of political debate.

The incident reportedly began when a school director sought assurance regarding the safety of his school building for students and staff. According to the director, no written guarantee of the building’s safety had been provided by the Deputy Mayor of Technical Services or the municipal authority. When the municipal authority failed to adequately address these concerns, the President of the Municipal Council allegedly launched a series of disparaging and ironic remarks towards the director.

Escalation and Walkout

In response, the ELME (Corfu Teachers’ Union), the North Corfu Parents’ Association, and other directors and teachers rose to defend their colleague. At this point, the Deputy Mayor of Technical Services reportedly moved threateningly towards the educators, unleashing “indecent characterizations” against them, with the support of other municipal councilors from the majority party. The ELME, the teachers, the North Corfu Parents’ Association, and the parents (though notably not the Directors of Education, both of whom were present) reacted strongly. They responded without stooping to the level of the municipal authority and subsequently walked out of the chamber, joined by the entire opposition of the Municipal Council.

The Mayor, in a controversial move, defended the behavior of his councilors, reportedly stating, “They did well to you.” This remark further fueled the outrage among the educators and parents present.

A “Show” Meeting?

Critics suggest that the municipal authority’s true intentions became clear during the meeting. They argue that the discussion was merely a “show for the public,” with invited parents, students, and teachers, but no formal agenda from the municipality and no television coverage of the proceedings. The Mayor reportedly spoke for over half an hour without providing concrete answers to the numerous serious problems raised by the protesting students, parents (through the North Corfu Parents’ Association), the ELME, and the school directors.

The underlying intent, according to those who walked out, was to intimidate and threaten anyone who dared to challenge the municipal authority’s policies and practices. This stance, they argue, implicitly defends the government’s underfunding and understaffing of municipalities nationwide, despite verbal claims to the contrary.

A Call for Accountability

The educators, students, and parents involved have declared that they will not be intimidated by such “outdated behaviors.” They vow to continue their struggle to defend public education and ensure the safety of students and teachers within schools, defying the threats from municipal authorities, the Ministry, and the Government. They assert that the lack of arguments and willingness to solve problems leads to bullying tactics, which only further highlights that public education is viewed as a cost to be cut.

The ELME and the Parents’ Association have called upon all stakeholders and the remaining factions of the Municipal Council to condemn the behavior and practices of the North Corfu Municipal Authority. This incident raises serious questions about transparency, accountability, and the respect for democratic processes within local governance in Corfu.

The events of yesterday’s council meeting underscore a deeply concerning trend where public officials, rather than engaging in constructive dialogue, resort to aggressive tactics when confronted with legitimate concerns from citizens and professionals. The lack of a clear, official response from the municipal authority regarding the safety of school buildings and the subsequent aggressive stance towards those raising these concerns demand further investigation and accountability.

This incident is not isolated. Across Greece, local authorities face increasing pressure to manage dwindling resources while addressing critical public services. However, the alleged tactics employed in North Corfu risk eroding public trust and stifling essential civic engagement.

The community now awaits a definitive response from the North Corfu Municipal Council regarding these serious allegations. The integrity of local governance and the well-being of the region’s educational system hang in the balance.
