Corfu, June 23, 2026 – The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands has announced a significant step forward in the construction of the Kontokali School Complex, with the issuance of the building permit. This development marks the culmination of extensive bureaucratic procedures and coordinated efforts by the relevant services to approve the Local Urban Plan.
Long-Awaited Project Nears Realization
The building permit (1992119/19.06.2026) for the school complex, which the local community has been anticipating for years, was issued by the Corfu Building Services. This project addresses a critical gap in the municipality’s educational infrastructure.
The financial backing for the project is secured, with a total budget of 5,350,000 euros (including VAT). Funding is provided through the “Antonis Tritsis” development program, under which the project was included in 2022.
Modern Facilities for Future Generations
The new complex will feature a modern 12-classroom Primary School and a 3-section Kindergarten, to be constructed in the “Panagia” area of Kontokali. This exemplary facility has been designed to meet contemporary educational and environmental needs, offering multi-faceted value to the community.
The complex will span 2,614 square meters of building facilities and will include:
- Safe and fully equipped classrooms and support areas.
- Modern sports facilities, including basketball and volleyball courts.
- An outdoor theater for cultural and school events.
- Extensive green spaces and planting, enhancing the school’s environmental character.
- 22 organized parking spaces to serve the needs of the educational community and parents.
Mayor Emphasizes Immediate Start of Works
Commenting on this positive development, the Mayor of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, Stefanos Poulis, highlighted that the path is now clear for the immediate commencement of works. He stated, “The issuance of the building permit was the last major requirement. In a few days, we will proceed without any delay to sign the contract with the contractor, who has already emerged from the tender process, so that the construction of the safe, modern school our children deserve can begin.”
The project is expected to significantly enhance the educational landscape of the region, providing a state-of-the-art learning environment for students in Kontokali and the surrounding areas.
