‘ATHENS:AM Extended’ Exhibition Explores Athens’ Nocturnal Face

Athens, May 4, 2026 – A new multimedia exhibition titled ‘ATHENS:AM Extended’ will open its doors from May 5 to May 20, 2026, at the METACOSMOI space, located at Geraniou 44 in central Athens. The exhibition, part of the ‘This is Athens City Festival 2026,’ delves into the multifaceted realities of Athens after dark, combining art and technology to offer a unique perspective on the city’s nocturnal life.

The exhibition, which transforms the original photographic work ‘ATHENS:AM’ by Thanasis Karatzas, is a collaboration with director and multimedia creator Byron Nikolopoulos. It aims to present a contemporary experience that integrates photography with artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), projections, and video installations. This innovative approach brings to life the parallel realities that emerge in the heart of Athens once the sun sets, exploring themes of socialization, architecture, poetry, realism, and the intersection of culture and history.

From Photography to Immersive Experience

The core of the project is built upon 88 black-and-white photographs taken between 2008 and 2022, capturing the diverse faces of Athens at night. This extensive collection formed the basis for the eponymous album, published in 2024 by the Italian publishing house 89 books, and presented at significant international events such as the Paris Photo Festival (2024), Photo London (2025), and Rotterdam Photo (2026).

In its exhibition format, ‘ATHENS:AM Extended’ creates a dialogue between photography and advanced technologies. Through AR applications, static images are activated with movement, sound, and color, transforming the visit into an interactive narrative where the viewer becomes an integral part of the artwork. Video projections and installations further enhance this multi-layered experience of the Athenian night.

A New Space for Multimedia Art

The exhibition also marks the inauguration of METACOSMOI, a specially designed venue for multimedia exhibitions in the heart of Athens. The symbolic connection of the space with the city enhances the overall experience, proposing an upgraded artistic and conceptual mapping of the city’s nightlife. The venue is accessible to people with disabilities.

‘ATHENS:AM Extended’ is held under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens and is an integral part of the ‘This is Athens City Festival 2026,’ a broader initiative aimed at celebrating and showcasing the city’s cultural vibrancy.
