Athens, May 30 – The city of Athens has officially launched an ambitious digital transformation program, dubbed ‘Upgrade Athens,’ aimed at modernizing urban services, enhancing daily life for its residents, and strengthening the management of critical urban infrastructure. The initiative, revealed by city officials, encompasses eight distinct projects focusing on key areas such as digital governance, public services, mobility, environmental monitoring, and fostering greater civic participation.

Technology to Drive Efficiency and Accessibility

According to city officials, the overarching goal of the ‘Upgrade Athens’ program is to leverage cutting-edge technology to make municipal services more efficient, responsive, and readily accessible to all citizens. Furthermore, the plan seeks to encourage a higher degree of citizen involvement in local decision-making processes, creating a more interactive and participatory urban environment.

Smart Waste Management for Cleaner Streets

A cornerstone of the ‘Upgrade Athens’ initiative is ‘Athens Smart Clean,’ a pioneering system designed to revolutionize waste collection and monitoring. This project will introduce a mobile application, ‘Athens, Clean City,’ allowing residents to conveniently schedule collections for bulky waste items. The system will also be bolstered by a fleet of 360 smart garbage trucks equipped with advanced telematics technology and 1,000 sensors strategically placed in waste bins. These technologies will provide real-time data on areas requiring immediate intervention, significantly improving efficiency and enabling city services to respond more swiftly to sanitation needs.

Empowering Citizens as Real-Time City Reporters

Another pivotal component of the program is ‘Athens Civil Alert,’ an innovative platform that will empower residents to report incidents such as fires, localized flooding, and fallen trees directly through a dedicated mobile application. Reports submitted via this app will be instantly transmitted to the city’s operations center, ensuring that authorities can respond without administrative delays. Citizens will also have the ability to track the progress of their reports through the same platform, fostering transparency and accountability. The system will integrate Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and will be seamlessly connected with other municipal digital services.

Smart Neighborhoods and Enhanced Digital Participation

The ‘Upgrade Athens’ plan also includes the strategic development of smart neighborhood infrastructure across the city. This will involve the installation of public Wi-Fi networks, environmental sensors to monitor air quality, and digital information displays in selected locations. A centralized platform will collect and analyze data from these diverse systems, providing city authorities with a unified and comprehensive overview of urban conditions. Residents will also gain access to digital consultation tools, online voting mechanisms, and platforms for submitting proposals, thereby facilitating greater participation in local governance. Beyond functional improvements, the platform will also highlight the unique identity of individual neighborhoods and suggest curated walking routes featuring local points of interest.

Expanding Electric Bicycle Sharing and AI-Powered Services

Athens is set to introduce a new public electric bicycle network, featuring 50 smart stations and 340 charging and docking points. This real-time system, accessible via a mobile application, will offer users convenient access to shared electric bicycles throughout the city, promoting sustainable urban mobility. Furthermore, under the project ‘Athens Gov – The City in Your Hand,’ residents will be provided with an artificial intelligence-powered digital assistant. This platform is envisioned to consolidate municipal services into a single, user-friendly interface, enabling users to track requests, receive essential information, and schedule appointments with ease. Concurrently, the ‘Athens Way’ sustainable mobility platform aims to integrate traffic management, parking services, and public transport into a unified digital ecosystem.

Smarter Schools and Protected Public Spaces

The program also extends to educational infrastructure, incorporating resource-monitoring systems for school buildings. Sensors and telemetry units will track electricity, water, and fuel consumption, contributing to improved efficiency and resource management within educational facilities. Additionally, a new vehicle access control system will be implemented in specific parts of the city center. Digital technologies and electronic control systems will be installed in selected pedestrian areas with the dual aim of protecting public spaces and effectively regulating vehicle access.
