???? Athens Unfiltered: Radio Producer Chryssa Oikonomopoulou Spills the Tea on City Life! ☕????????

Ever wondered what it’s REALLY like to live in Athens? Forget the postcards and tourist traps – we’re diving deep with someone who knows the city inside and out! Chryssa Oikonomopoulou, a radio producer and bar owner, is dishing out all the juicy details about the Greek capital, and trust us, you’ll want to hear this! ????

Athens: chaotic, charming, exasperating, irresistible. Sound familiar? If you’ve ever set foot in this ancient yet ever-evolving city, you know exactly what we’re talking about. But where do Athenians truly spend their time? Where do they unwind, meet friends, or grab that essential daily coffee? ☕

Our new column, “Meet the Athenians,” is all about connecting you with the heart and soul of the city through its people. And for our latest chat, we snagged an exclusive with Chryssa Oikonomopoulou, who spilled the beans to TO BHMA International edition!

???? What’s the Vibe? Chryssa’s Work & Athens’ Pulse!

So, how does a radio producer connect with a city as vibrant as Athens? Chryssa says it’s all about that invisible, yet powerful, bond with listeners! “There is no greater everyday connection between actual strangers, than the one between radio producers and their audience,” she explains. “Sometimes we haven’t even confessed the things we share on air with our nearest and dearest.” Deep, right? ????

Picture this: someone walking through Athens, headphones on, laughing at a joke a complete stranger (who’s also totally NOT a stranger!) just cracked on the radio. Or a driver stuck in traffic, finding a moment of joy through a voice on the airwaves. “I mean, isn’t this as urban as it gets?” Chryssa asks. We couldn’t agree more! It’s the everyday soundtrack of Athens, and Chryssa is a master conductor! ????

⏰ 24 Hours in Athens: Chryssa’s MUST-DO List!

Alright, if you had just ONE DAY in Athens, where would Chryssa send you? Get ready to take notes, because these are some serious insider tips! ????

  • Plaka, aka “the old town”: “Because a cliché is a cliché for a reason, Plaka is the mandatory start,” Chryssa declares. It’s got that mix of overly touristic corners, ancient ruins mingling with grass, and even concerts at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. She describes it as finding “the sudden calm as we approach the eye of this storm of noise.” Honestly, she gets poetic just talking about it! ????️✨
  • Barrett: For drinks, her absolute go-to is Barrett, which she calls “the only bar I feel comfortable drinking alone at.” We love a place that feels like home, even when you’re flying solo! ????
  • Argoura Fish Restaurant: And for a meal you won’t forget? “I would definitely book a table at Argoura Fish restaurant. You’ve got to trust me on that one.” Consider us convinced! ????????️

❤️ Love & (Slightly Annoyed) Pet Peeves: Athens Edition!

Every city has its quirks, and Athens is no exception! Chryssa isn’t holding back on what she loves and what she wishes was a little different. Get ready for some real talk! ????️

What she’s NOT a fan of:

  • The “wholesome-ish minimalistic algorithm bars.” Yeah, we know the type.
  • The fact that downtown Athens can be so dirty and noisy. Can we get a clean-up crew, please?! ????????
  • The climate! “Unbearable of late for someone who’s somehow less summery than the average Athenian.” We feel you, Chryssa! ????????

What she ABSOLUTELY LOVES:

  • “The Scene”: You know, the theaters, bars, parties, live venues, and the culinary rise! “Even though I liked it more before, I have to admit it’s still vibrant, still round-the-clock.” Athens never sleeps, and neither does its cultural heart! ????????????
  • The “ugly, ungentrifiable downtown spots nobody in their right mind would choose for a stroll.” These are the hidden gems, the places with true character that resist the polish of gentrification. Respect! ✊
  • The Acropolis! No matter how much gentrification (which she’s not a fan of) messes with neighborhoods, “the Acropolis will always be there. Cheesy? Yes. True? You bet.” And we agree! Some things are just timeless. ????????????

Chryssa Oikonomopoulou isn’t just a radio producer at Nostos radio and co-owner of the “Barrett” bar; she’s a true Athenian, living and breathing the city’s unique rhythm. Her insights remind us that Athens is more than just ancient ruins; it’s a living, breathing, sometimes messy, but always captivating metropolis! ✨

What about YOU? What’s your favorite (or least favorite) thing about Athens? Let us know in the comments! ????
