Athens, Greece – March 9, 2026 – The urban bus fleet of Athens is slated for a complete overhaul by 2027, with the introduction of over 1,100 new vehicles. This ambitious modernization program aims to significantly enhance public transport services and accelerate the Greek capital’s shift towards greener mobility solutions.
Extensive Fleet Renewal Program Underway
The renewal initiative is being spearheaded by OSY, the bus operator for the Athens Urban Transport Organisation. It involves replacing existing buses and trolleybuses across the metropolitan area with modern vehicles that boast advanced technology and significantly reduced, or even zero, environmental impact.
Substantial progress has already been achieved since 2024. A total of 740 new buses, comprising electric, natural gas-powered, and Euro VI technology models, have already been integrated into the network. This number is projected to climb to 865 vehicles by the close of May 2026. These additions mean that nearly 80 percent of the buses currently operating daily in the Attica region have been renewed.
The comprehensive plan dictates that by the end of 2027, the entire fleet of buses and trolleybuses will consist exclusively of modern vehicles. The project envisions the incorporation of approximately 1,100 new buses, all designed with low or zero emissions. Furthermore, all new vehicles will be fully accessible for passengers with disabilities and equipped with state-of-the-art technological systems to enhance efficiency and passenger experience.
Focus on Sustainability and Advanced Technologies
A core component of the modernization program is its strong emphasis on sustainability. Authorities are committed to expanding the use of electric mobility and are pioneering the introduction of hydrogen-powered buses on a pilot basis. Funding has already been secured for the procurement of 50 hydrogen fuel-cell buses, complemented by the development of a dedicated hydrogen refueling station located in the Thriassio area of western Attica.
To support this new, advanced fleet, OSY is also undertaking significant infrastructure upgrades. These include the installation of high-capacity charging stations at depots, improvements to existing electrical supply systems, and the creation of new parking facilities specifically designed for electric buses.
The new vehicles will also feature modern telematics and digital monitoring systems. These systems are crucial for optimizing fleet performance, ensuring operational efficiency, and ultimately improving the reliability of services for passengers.
Anticipated Benefits for Attica Residents
Authorities anticipate that this extensive fleet upgrade will lead to a marked improvement in service reliability, a reduction in passenger waiting times, and an overall enhanced travel experience for commuters throughout the Attica region. This initiative represents a significant step towards a more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly public transport system for Athens.
