Athens State University Celebrates Renovated Brown Hall and New Campus Store

Athens State University officially marked the completion of two significant campus projects with separate ribbon-cutting events on March 30. The ceremonies celebrated the newly renovated Brown Hall building and the grand opening of the new Pillar & Paw gift shop, both contributing to the university’s ongoing development.

Brown Hall: A New Chapter for Health Sciences

The historic Brown Hall, a three-story structure originally constructed in 1912 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, has undergone extensive renovation. This building, the second oldest on the Athens State campus after Founders Hall, will now serve as the dedicated home for the university’s expanding Health Sciences programs. The building is named in honor of Ms. Florence Brown, a woman recognized for her dedication to student service.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, university President Dr. Catherine Wehlburg emphasized Brown Hall’s evolving role. “Over the years, Brown Hall has evolved with Athens State University,” said Dr. Wehlburg. “It’s been a residence hall, the President’s home, offices for the Provost and many others. Today we celebrate the start of a new chapter as this becomes the home of our Nursing and Health Sciences faculty, an especially fitting purpose for a building rooted in a legacy of care, healing, and service.”

Alabama State Senator Arthur Orr also highlighted the importance of the renovation, stating, “The renovation of Brown Hall is a great accomplishment for Athens State and puts us in a great position for the future of higher education in the Athens and North Alabama area. I’m pleased the facility will house Health Sciences faculty, which is a growing area of our economy and our workforce needs. Athens State is taking the lead in providing nurses for us across North Alabama – what an important mission for this institution to undertake, and now we have a great place to do it.”

Pillar & Paw: A New Hub for Campus Life

In a separate event, the university’s Pillar & Paw campus and gift shop celebrated its grand opening at its new permanent location on the top floor of the Sandridge Student Center. This new space not only offers retail sales but also features the adjoining “heBREW’s” coffee shop, a playful homage to Athens State’s mascot, Hebrew the Bear. The store operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., providing a convenient new hub for students and faculty.

These campus enhancements underscore Athens State University’s commitment to providing modern facilities and resources that support both academic excellence and a vibrant campus community. The renovation of Brown Hall is particularly significant as it addresses the growing demand for skilled professionals in the health sciences sector in North Alabama.
