The Athens Science Festival is set to host a fascinating ‘Christmas Rendezvous with the Stars’ from December 18 to 21, 2025, at the Athens Conservatoire. This special two-day event, part of The Christmas Lab, will immerse attendees in the wonders of Astronomy and Astrophysics through engaging talks, stargazing sessions, and an award-winning documentary. It promises to be a celebration of science, knowledge, and inspiration for all ages.

Exploring the Invisible Universe & Citizen Science

On Sunday, December 21, at 7:00 PM, Dr. Eleni Vardoulaki will deliver a talk titled ‘The Invisible Universe & Citizen Science’. Dr. Vardoulaki will delve into the origins of the Universe and modern observational techniques. She will explain why a diverse array of telescopes, both on Earth and in space, are crucial for observing astronomical objects and phenomena that remain invisible to the naked eye, from radio waves to X-rays.

This presentation will offer the audience an opportunity to explore the ‘invisible’ Universe and discover how citizens can actively contribute to contemporary scientific research. Dr. Vardoulaki will highlight the dynamic role of Citizen Science in driving new and significant discoveries.

The Winter Solstice and its Connection to Christmas

On Saturday, December 20, at 6:00 PM, Athanasios Evangelopoulos from the ‘Dioskouroi’ Astronomy Club of Sparta will present a talk on ‘The Winter Solstice and its Connection to Christmas’. The winter solstice, a pivotal point in Earth’s orbit around the Sun, has been recognized since ancient times and is deeply interwoven with traditions across various cultures, including the celebration of Christmas.

This interactive and captivating talk will blend science with history and traditions, promising to impress both children and adults alike.

Stargazing in the Athenian Christmas Sky

Following Mr. Evangelopoulos’s talk on Saturday, December 20, at 7:30 PM, the public will have the unique opportunity to observe the star-filled Athenian sky through telescopes. This stargazing session will be conducted in collaboration with the ‘Dioskouroi’ Astronomy Club of Sparta and the Astronomical & Astrophysical Society of Western Greece, offering a direct experience of celestial wonders.

Documentary Screening: SALLY

On Saturday, December 20, at 9:30 PM, a screening of the National Geographic documentary ‘SALLY’ will take place. This 2025 production has garnered critical acclaim, winning the Prix UPSIDE at the Pariscience – Paris Science Festival and the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at Sundance 2025.

The film chronicles the remarkable life of Sally Ride (1951-2012), the first American woman to journey into space in 1983 as part of the STS-7 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. After her space missions, Ride dedicated her life to promoting STEM education, particularly for girls and young people. ‘SALLY’ is described as a deeply inspiring documentary about space, science, and the power of human vision.

Access to all talks, the stargazing event, and the documentary screening is included with a General Admission ticket, valid for the respective day of each event.

The Christmas Lab: A Festival of Science and Fun

The Christmas Lab, running from December 18 to 21, 2025, at the Athens Conservatoire, brings together carols, traditional Greek Christmas treats (melomakarona), spectacular experiments, talks, stargazing, and delightful screenings. The Athens Science Festival 2025 is organized by the educational organization ‘Science Communication – SciCo’ and the British Council, in collaboration with numerous academic, research, and educational institutions.
