Athens, January 5, 2026 – The Athens Municipal Council is scheduled to hold a special session today to elect its new president. The meeting, which follows the resignation of the previous president, is a crucial step in the city’s administrative proceedings.

Special Session Convened for New Presidency

The Municipal Authority of Athens has called for this special session, in accordance with Article 64 of Law 3852/2010, as amended and currently in force, and Circular YPES 1327/23.12.2023. The session will take place at the Municipal Council’s meeting hall, located at Athinas 63, starting at 3:00 PM.

Hybrid Participation and Key Agenda Items

To accommodate all members, the session will be conducted both in person and through teleconference, as stipulated by Article 67 of Law 3852/2010, further amended by Article 11, paragraph 1 of Law 5043/2023. Municipal councillors were required to declare their preferred method of participation (in-person or teleconference) by Friday, January 2, 2026, at 3:00 PM, via email to [email protected].

The agenda for today’s meeting includes two primary items:

  1. Acceptance of the resignation statement (protocol number 235/02-01-2026) from the President of the Municipal Council.
  2. Following the potential acceptance of the resignation, the election of a new President of the Municipal Council, in accordance with Article 64 of Law 3852/2010. The session will be presided over by Ms. ROXANI-EVANGELIA MPEI-KARAMPOTSOU, the municipal councillor who received the most preference votes in the majority faction.

Leadership Transition and Administrative Continuity

The outgoing president, Emmanouil I. Velegrakis, has overseen the council during a period of significant activity. The election of a new president is expected to ensure the smooth continuation of the council’s work and address ongoing municipal affairs. The process is designed to be transparent and adhere to established legal frameworks, ensuring a democratic transition of leadership within the Athens Municipal Council.
