Athens Metro Upgrade to Cut Wait Times to 3.5 Minutes

Athens, April 15 – A comprehensive €900 million investment plan is poised to dramatically transform Athens’ public transport system, aiming to significantly reduce metro waiting times to as little as 3.5 minutes. The initiative, announced on April 14, 2026, includes a major overhaul of existing infrastructure, the introduction of new trains and electric buses, and a strong focus on improving accessibility for all citizens.

This ambitious project is part of a broader funding program exceeding €900 million, specifically targeting upgrades across urban transport systems, enhancing accessibility, and expanding environmentally friendly mobility solutions throughout Greece, with a particular focus on the capital.

Major Boost for Metro and Bus Networks

The core of the plan involves the acquisition of 22 new metro trains and a substantial upgrade of the existing rolling stock. On key metro lines, authorities anticipate that the average interval between trains will drop to approximately 3 minutes and 45 seconds. This significant reduction is expected to ease congestion during peak hours and drastically cut down waiting times for daily commuters.

Complementing the metro enhancements, 210 new electric buses will be introduced into major urban areas. This expansion aims to improve service coverage, particularly in districts experiencing high transport demand. Officials estimate that these changes will not only reduce overall waiting times by around 15% but also contribute to lowering operational costs for public transport operators.

The investment extends beyond the metropolitan areas, with plans for regional and rural transport improvements. This includes the deployment of 100 electric buses in less densely populated areas, supported by a new national digital platform for efficient route planning and bookings. Additionally, new municipal transport routes will be introduced, alongside infrastructure projects such as pedestrian zones and cycling paths, promoting sustainable mobility across the country.

Focus on Accessibility and Inclusion

A central pillar of this investment strategy is the commitment to improving accessibility. Dozens of metro and railway stations are slated for upgrades, with a primary focus on making them fully accessible to people with disabilities and those with reduced mobility. This includes the installation of elevators, ramps, and other necessary infrastructure to ensure seamless travel for all passengers.

Projections indicate that daily journeys by passengers with disabilities are expected to more than double, increasing from 4,000 to an estimated 10,000. Further measures include the development of on-demand transport services specifically designed to cater to tens of thousands of vulnerable citizens, offering personalized and flexible transport options.

A significant portion of the funding will also be allocated to dedicated transport services for students with disabilities. The goal is to cover approximately 70% of national needs in this area with specially adapted vehicles, ensuring that students can access education safely and efficiently.

Transition to Cleaner Transport

The transition to greener and more sustainable transport options is another key objective of the investment plan. Financial incentives will be offered to encourage the replacement of conventional taxis with electric vehicles, contributing to a reduction in urban pollution and carbon emissions. These incentives will include higher subsidies for accessible taxis specifically designed to accommodate passengers with disabilities, further integrating inclusivity with environmental responsibility.

The comprehensive nature of this investment underscores a strategic vision for Athens and the wider Greek transport network. By modernizing infrastructure, expanding fleets, and prioritizing accessibility and environmental sustainability, the plan aims to create a more efficient, inclusive, and future-proof public transport system for all residents and visitors.
