Athens, January 12 – A significant milestone has been reached in the construction of Athens Metro Line 4, a project poised to revolutionize urban mobility for both residents and tourists. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) ‘Athina’, one of two TBMs working on the Goudi-Galatsi line, has successfully completed 90 percent of its designated route and is on the verge of its breakthrough at the Evangelismos shaft.

‘Athina’ TBM’s Journey and Progress

The TBM ‘Athina’ commenced its tunneling operations from Katechaki, meticulously excavating through various key areas of Athens. Its route has encompassed Goudi, Zografou, Ilisia, the University Campus, and Kaisariani. This extensive journey marks a critical phase in the Line 4 project, demonstrating steady progress towards its completion.

Upon the successful completion of its drive, the 100-meter-long TBM ‘Athina’ will undergo dismantling. This event will signify the conclusion of a vital section of the overall construction plan, paving the way for subsequent phases of the metro line development.

‘Niki’ TBM’s Advance and Future Path

Concurrently, its counterpart, the TBM ‘Niki’, is making substantial progress from the opposite direction. Starting its excavation from the Veikou shaft, ‘Niki’ has already completed 2.6 kilometers of its route, accounting for 37 percent of its total length. It is currently advancing towards the Kypseli Square station area.

The path ahead for ‘Niki’ involves traversing densely populated neighborhoods, including Dikastiria, Alexandras, Exarchia, Akadimias, and Kolonaki, before it ultimately reaches Evangelismos. This intricate route highlights the engineering challenges and the extensive urban integration required for the new metro line.

Addressing Delays and Future Impact

Despite some delays encountered at a few of the 15 planned stations, primarily due to legal or technical issues, the consistent progress in tunnel construction reinforces optimism for the timely completion of Line 4. This new metro line is anticipated to significantly enhance visitor access across Athens.

The strategic importance of Line 4 extends beyond mere transportation. It is expected to facilitate faster and more convenient connections to a multitude of key attractions, including museums, university facilities, expansive parks, and vibrant cultural and food districts. This improved connectivity is projected to substantially bolster Athens’ appeal as a premier city break destination, offering both residents and visitors enhanced opportunities for exploration and engagement with the city’s rich offerings.

The Broader Vision for Athens’ Urban Transport

The construction of Athens Metro Line 4 is a cornerstone of a broader vision for sustainable urban transport in the Greek capital. By expanding the metro network, the project aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and provide a more efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters and tourists.

The integration of advanced infrastructure, such as the new metro line, is crucial for Athens as it continues to grow as a modern European capital while preserving its historical heritage. The project underscores a commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Officials from the public works department emphasize that rigorous planning and execution are underway to mitigate any further delays and ensure the project’s successful delivery. The completion of Line 4 is not just about adding another metro line; it’s about creating a more accessible, sustainable, and dynamic Athens for everyone.

The next steps involve the continued advancement of TBM ‘Niki’ and the preparation for the dismantling of ‘Athina’, followed by the intricate work of station construction and system integration. The city eagerly awaits the full operational launch of Line 4, which promises to redefine urban travel in Athens.
