Athens, April 8 – World Athletics (WA) has announced its support for plans to upgrade the status of the Athens Marathon, the Authentic (AMA), with the ambitious goal of positioning the race among the world’s leading marathon events. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) and the Region of Attica, includes the marathon’s elevation to Elite status and the launch of a preliminary process for Athens to host a new standalone World Marathon Championship in 2030.
World Athletics Recognizes Historical Significance
Recognizing the race’s profound historical significance as the birthplace of the marathon, World Athletics has officially placed Athens among the world’s top marathon races. Discussions are currently underway regarding the Greek capital’s potential pivotal role in the future structure of global marathon competitions.
“We are excited about the prospect of hosting the first World Marathon Championship in Athens – the birthplace of the event,” stated WA President Sebastian Coe, highlighting the historical resonance of the proposed move.
Towards a Standalone Global Marathon Championship
This strategic move is part of a broader initiative by World Athletics to reshape road running events globally. While the marathon will continue to be an integral part of the World Athletics Championships in 2027 and 2029, it is slated to be separated into an independent global event from 2030 onwards.
The new standalone championship is expected to take place annually, with men and women competing in alternating years, thereby maintaining the current elite competition format and ensuring high-level athletic performance.
“Road to 2030” Plan and Race Upgrades
This development marks the commencement of a multi-year investment plan specifically designed to upgrade both the Athens Marathon race itself and its supporting infrastructure. Under the comprehensive “Road to 2030” plan, organizers are focusing on several key areas:
- Improved runner services, aiming to enhance the overall experience for participants.
- Enhanced safety measures, ensuring the well-being of all athletes and attendees.
- Upgraded digital systems, leveraging technology to streamline operations and engagement.
The ultimate goal of this plan is for the Athens Marathon to achieve Platinum Label status by 2029, a designation that would firmly place it among the world’s most prestigious road races.
SEGAS President Sofia Sakorafa underscored the federation’s unwavering commitment to this ambitious undertaking. “The upgrade of the Athens Marathon, the Authentic, is not just another goal but a commitment to excellence,” she affirmed, emphasizing the dedication behind the initiative.
New Standards and 2026 Registrations
Regional authorities have also pledged their full support for this significant initiative, committing to crucial infrastructure improvements along the historic marathon route. Attica Governor Nikos Hardalias highlighted these efforts, stating, “We are moving forward with the modernization of the Authentic Marathon Route, investing in quality, safety and international visibility.”
As part of its transition to a higher-tier global event, the Athens Marathon will align its registration structure with World Athletics Elite race standards. This alignment will include significant upgrades to health services and safety protocols, ensuring the event meets the highest international benchmarks.
Registrations for the 2026 race are scheduled to open on April 24, providing an early opportunity for athletes to participate in this evolving event.
