Athens Jazz Festival Celebrates 25 Years with a Landmark Edition, Transforming Technopolis City of Athens

Athens, April 24, 2026 – The Athens Jazz Festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an extensive, landmark edition that promises to transform Technopolis City of Athens into a vibrant hub of music, rhythm, and energy. Running from May 25 to May 31, 2026, the festival will feature 20 acts from Greece and abroad, showcasing the freshest sounds of contemporary jazz, all with free admission.

A Quarter Century of Jazz Innovation

For a quarter of a century, the Athens Jazz Festival has been a cornerstone of the city’s musical landscape. This anniversary edition is not merely a retrospective but a dynamic statement of continuity, pushing the boundaries of jazz and embracing new sounds. Artists and ensembles from Greece and beyond will take to the Technopolis stage to highlight the most innovative aspects of modern jazz, complemented by a series of parallel events designed to enrich the festival experience.

The 25th installment of the festival is set to be bolder, more extroverted, and more vibrant than ever before. It aims to redefine the limits of jazz for the future while honoring the legacy and passion of those who built this institution and supported its artistic identity, making Athens Jazz a point of reference for over two decades.

Diverse Lineup and Unconventional Sounds

At the 25th Athens Jazz, all sonic combinations are now possible, and no geographical or musical mold can confine the rhythms. Twenty acts from Greece and abroad will occupy the Technopolis stage, presenting a diverse program that transcends borders and captures the pulse of recent years. The lineup is curated to reveal the most subversive, ‘street’ side of the sound, without forgetting its timeless roots. Eschewing conventions, the program is not just a simple succession of concerts but a carefully crafted narrative that illuminates the multifaceted expressions of the genre. It is designed for those who love music that evolves, defies labels, and can be danced to, but most importantly, experienced collectively.

A Special Tribute to Greek Jazz

For its 25th birthday, Athens Jazz has prepared a big surprise, dedicating the Greek day to the festival’s journey itself. A tribute night, a condensation of memory and creation, designed exclusively for the 25 years of Athens Jazz. Thus, on Monday, May 25, two Greek acts will take to the Technopolis stage, captivating audiences with their sounds and providing a representative mark of this year’s anniversary event. The Stavros Lantsias Quartet will open the curtain with the project “My Ennio Morricone,” a tribute to George Charonitis, a crucial collaborator of Athens Jazz who had a special relationship with the work of the great Italian composer. Immediately after, the Greek Cooking Band will take the stage, a unique ensemble created specifically for the 25th edition, activating a living network of previous winners and creators of the Athens Jazz Greek day, and which will connect the American jazz past with authentic folk roots! A living testament to how Greek jazz evolves, converses with its past, and remains open, bold, and contemporary.

International Acts and Genre-Bending Performances

On Tuesday, May 26, the evening opens with the unconventional jazz trio Lesni Zver from the Czech Republic, who view nu-jazz as a common ground for freedom and spontaneity rather than strictly tied to historical jazz. They are followed by OTOOTO from Denmark, whose electro-organic laboratory creates a fresh nu-jazz mirror for the world. The night concludes with Conic Rose from Germany, a nu-jazz quintet whose mystical loops create an immersive experience, defying easy categorization as Future Jazz or Jazztronica.

Wednesday, May 27, will see Estonia’s Keelepeksjad blend folk melodies with electro-jazz-rock grooves. The Norwegian trio Elephant9 will then explore fusion boundaries with progressive elements, drawing inspiration from Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Soft Machine, and Fela Kuti. The evening concludes with Alabaster DePlume from the UK, whose fragile saxophone and spoken word narrative create a unique, cross-genre universe balancing introspective spiritual jazz and dark, vulnerable folk.

On Thursday, May 28, the Ermis Michael Trio from Cyprus will present original compositions with rich harmonic textures and fluid improvisation. Following them, Poland’s Kosmonauci will effortlessly blend future jazz, drum ‘n’ bass, and contemporary jazzy hip hop. Finally, the Hungarian trio Jazzbois, beloved by Gilles Peterson, will bring cosmic beats and hip hop flair, appealing to new jazzheads who appreciate grooves from Herbie Hancock to Thundercat and J Dilla.

Friday, May 29, offers a dynamic blend of hip hop, punk rock, and contemporary jazz with LINQ from Luxembourg. The Irene Reig Quartet from Spain will then deliver powerful straight hard bop. The night culminates with Gianluca Petrella Cosmic Renaissance from Italy, whose intergalactic, Afro-futuristic vehicle promises radical cosmic freedom and unconstrained nu-soulful jazz possibilities, inspired by the legacy of Sun Ra.

Saturday, May 30, the most dance-inducing day of Athens Jazz, begins with Amphitrio from Romania, whose curiosity and respect for cultural diversity invite narratives about the sound of freedom. Switzerland’s the BIG TUSK collective will then blur improvisational boundaries with boundless imagination and organic naturalness. The evening concludes with Elektro Guzzi from Austria, a live machine creating analog techno without computers or loopers, showcasing their unique sonic identity that transcends traditional jazz or techno.

On Sunday, May 31, the final day of the festival, Rebecka Törnqvist from Sweden will present her fragile yet lyrical sound, bending familiar pop forms. The Esdras Nogueira Quintet from Brazil will then open up ancestral Brazilian paths, blending tight Latin jazz with Afrobeat-infused MPB. The festival concludes with Lagon Nwar from France, whose live performance, a meeting of grounded memories from Burkina Faso, avant-garde, Creole tradition, and skewed European pop, is an experience to be witnessed firsthand.

From May 25 to May 31, 2026, the anniversary Athens Jazz Festival will honor what came before, celebrate what is happening now, and pave the way for what is to come. In its 25th turn, after years of creative presence and evolution, one of Athens’ most consistent, timeless, and vibrant cultural institutions emphatically confirms why it is an absolute urban landmark.
