Athens, December 24 – Athens International Airport (AIA) is set to embark on a significant €1 billion investment program aimed at expanding its facilities, with project completion expected by 2032. This ambitious undertaking, announced by outgoing CEO Giannis Paraschis, marks a new chapter for the airport, 30 years after its founding.

A Milestone Investment for Athens International Airport

The year 2026 is poised to be a milestone for AIA as it initiates this substantial expansion. In the coming months, the company will issue a tender for the expansion of the passenger terminal. The project will see new facilities delivered in phases to minimize disruption for travelers during the construction period.

“2025 was an outstanding year for the airport,” stated Giannis Paraschis during a press event on Monday, December 21. He highlighted that approximately 34 million passengers are expected to pass through AIA’s gates, attributing this success to Greece’s strong post-pandemic recovery and the renewed ability of Greeks to travel.

Focus on Transparency and Strategic Growth

Paraschis emphasized that this investment opens a new chapter for AIA, underscoring the company’s commitment to transparency and tangible results. “One chapter closes, and a new one begins,” he remarked, reflecting on the airport’s journey.

He further added, “We’ve faced both easy and challenging times, but the airport has remained a model of best practice, establishing itself as one of the most successful airports internationally.” Paraschis also referenced the completion of the airport’s photovoltaic park and recalled that in 2025, AIA was recognized among the world’s top airports.

Project Details and Timeline

A company executive confirmed that the tender for the €1 billion expansion, encompassing both the main and satellite terminals, will be announced in the immediate future. While acknowledging potential temporary inconvenience for passengers during construction, the airport aims to manage the process efficiently.

According to earlier statements by Paraschis, half of the capital expenditures are anticipated to be invested by the end of 2028, with the remaining portion completed by 2032. This phased approach is designed to ensure continuous operation while upgrading infrastructure.

Supporting Greece’s Tourism Vision

Through this ambitious project, Athens International Airport continues to demonstrate its strategic growth vision. Airport management reaffirms its commitment to supporting Greece’s efforts to position itself as a premier international tourist destination. The expansion is expected to significantly increase the airport’s capacity, accommodating a growing number of visitors and enhancing the overall travel experience.

The investment underscores the airport’s role as a vital gateway to Greece, contributing to the country’s economic development and tourism sector. It also reflects a forward-looking strategy to meet future demands and maintain AIA’s competitive edge in the global aviation industry.
