Athens International Airport: A Quarter-Century of Growth and Connectivity
Athens, April 5, 2026 – Athens International Airport (ATH) is marking its 25th anniversary in 2026 with a remarkable expansion of its network, solidifying its position as one of Europe’s fastest-growing airports. The year is set to bring a total of 17 new route developments and 2 additional services, significantly enhancing connectivity and passenger traffic.
Record-Breaking 2025 Sets the Stage for Further Expansion
The momentum from 2025, which saw ATH achieve a record 34 million passengers and 39 route developments, continues into the current year. In 2025, Athens welcomed 17 new destinations, added 17 additional services on existing routes, and introduced 5 new airlines to its portfolio.
Strategic Market Openings: India and Dallas Lead the Way
A pivotal milestone for Athens in 2026 is the opening of the Indian market. For the first time, Athens is directly connected to Delhi and Mumbai, with IndiGo deploying its brand-new A321 XLR aircraft. This strategic move, supported by Athens’ extensive incentives and tailor-made marketing support, is not only crucial for direct access to one of the world’s largest markets but also enhances Athens’ connectivity with multiple Asian destinations beyond Delhi and Mumbai.
Equally significant is American Airlines’ new direct service connecting Athens to Dallas. This new destination links Athens to one of American Airlines’ strongest global hubs. With this addition, American Airlines becomes the strongest US airline in terms of network coverage at ATH, offering 5 direct connections from Athens with 35 weekly departures in Summer 2026, equivalent to 5 daily flights.
