Athens, March 5 – Athens hoteliers are advocating for robust investment in infrastructure, enhanced visitor experience, and stronger industry collaboration to further solidify the Greek capital’s standing as a premier year-round tourism destination. Industry leaders emphasize that the next phase of growth for Athens tourism is contingent upon sustained investment in urban infrastructure and services capable of supporting increasing visitor numbers while upholding high-quality standards for travelers.

Hoteliers Emphasize Strategic Planning for Sustainable Growth

The call for action emerged during a recent gathering of members of the Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association, where sector representatives engaged in discussions regarding the challenges confronting the destination and the priorities for the forthcoming years. Association President Evgenios Vassilikos underscored the positive trajectory Athens has demonstrated in recent years as an international destination. He stressed the critical need for strategic planning to ensure sustained growth, asserting that strengthening investments, upgrading infrastructure, and continuously enhancing the visitor experience must remain central priorities for the sector.

The association is also actively encouraging its members to participate in three comprehensive industry studies. These studies, conducted in collaboration with GBR Consulting, focus on benchmarking, safety and cleanliness, and visitor satisfaction and performance. The aim is to bolster data-driven decision-making processes for the destination, ensuring that future strategies are informed and effective.

Key Challenges: Infrastructure and Short-Term Rentals

Yiannis Hatzis, President of the Hellenic Hoteliers Federation, acknowledged the significant tourism momentum Athens and Attica have experienced in recent years. However, he also pointed out that the destination continues to grapple with ongoing challenges. “The development of a leading year-round destination necessitates modern and resilient infrastructure that elevates the visitor experience,” Hatzis stated. He further added that a more equitable regulatory framework for short-term rentals is essential to foster balanced competition within the tourism market.

Angela Varela, President of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), highlighted the pivotal role played by Athens’ hotel sector in accommodating millions of travelers annually and in shaping the overall visitor experience of the destination. Representatives from across the industry stressed that continued cooperation between public authorities and various tourism stakeholders will be instrumental in sustaining Athens’ growth as a highly competitive urban tourism destination.

This concerted effort aims to ensure that Athens not only maintains its current appeal but also evolves to meet the future demands of global tourism, providing an exceptional experience for all visitors while benefiting the local economy and community.
