Athens, March 7 – The 14th Athens Half Marathon is set to return to the Greek capital tomorrow, March 8, 2026, with an unprecedented number of participants. The event boasts 6,000 additional entries compared to the previous year and introduces a new 5km road race, expanding its appeal to a wider range of runners.
Event Dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis and International Women’s Day
This year’s half marathon is dedicated to the revered late Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, paying tribute to his lasting legacy. Concurrently, the event coincides with International Women’s Day, celebrating women’s significant contributions to society and their increasing participation in sports. This dual dedication underscores the event’s cultural and social significance.
Established in the 1960s, the 21km half marathon distance gained popularity as a more accessible alternative to the classic 42km marathon. The event received official recognition from the World Athletics Federation in 1990. The first Athens Half Marathon was organized in 2012 through a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Athens and the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS).
“The Athens Half Marathon is now one of the most important running institutions in the country,” stated SEGAS President Sofia Sakorafa. She emphasized that the event successfully merges the spirit of sport with the rich history and inherent charm of the Greek capital, offering a unique experience for participants and spectators alike.
