Athens Digital Arts Festival: A Festival for All, an Experience That Changes You
The Athens Digital Arts Festival (ADAF), Greece’s largest and longest-running digital arts festival, is set to transform Technopolis City of Athens into a vibrant digital canvas for its 22nd edition. Running from April 23 to 26, 2026, the festival brings together artists, scientists, and creators from around the world, offering an accessible experience for everyone, regardless of their familiarity with technology.
Digital art is no longer a distant or strictly technological concept; it’s a living, evolving language that unites image, sound, body, and data, creating experiences that are not merely observed but lived. In an ever-transforming world, the need to understand this new form of expression becomes increasingly vital. This is where the Athens Digital Arts Festival acts as an open map for this transition.
The ‘META-MORPHOSIS’ Theme: A Narrative of Change
This year’s theme, ‘META-MORPHOSIS,’ serves as a multi-layered narrative exploring change: how identities, environments, and our relationships with nature and technology are transformed. From the physical to the digital, and from the personal to the collective, everything is in a constant state of flux.
What to Expect at the Athens Digital Arts Festival: An Immersive Journey
The experience begins in the Machine Shop Courtyard and seamlessly continues indoors, creating a unified path where light, sound, and movement gradually alter one’s perception of space and self.
Outdoor Installations: Light, Water, and Reflection
- Passengers by Guillaume Marmin: Visitors enter a ‘capsule’ that acts as a filter between inside and outside. The environment multiplies according to one’s perspective, and one’s image expands into infinite reflections through compositions of light and sound. Geometric abstraction and the continuous alteration of the visual field create an experience of detachment from the body, as if transported to an algorithmic universe where one’s presence becomes part of the composition.
- Waterlight Graffiti by Antonin Fourneau: A wall transforms into a living surface of expression. Thousands of LEDs activate upon contact with water, creating luminous traces that appear and disappear. The more water applied, the more intense the light, turning a simple gesture into an ephemeral, luminous imprint. This concept, inspired by water calligraphy and urban light aesthetics, redefines our relationship with public space, proposing a new form of collective, interactive creation.
Indoor Installations: Connecting the Physical and Digital
Inside the Machine Shop, the concept of metamorphosis takes on a multi-layered dimension through works connecting the physical with the digital.
- Aqua Olympia by Artur Grycuk: A watery environment crafted from light, sound, and movement fully envelops the viewer. Blue waves of light undulate, luminous spheres mimic droplets, and metallic rods with pulsating lights react to movement, creating the sensation of ‘swimming’ within a living, breathing organism. The presence of smoke enhances the illusion of the liquid element, adding a sense of mystery.
- Unsettled by Veronica Sabat, Cristina Planas, and Martina Teigeiro: An interactive ecosystem highlights migration as a common thread between humans and nature. Light and sound respond to every movement, creating a digital ocean that ‘perceives’ the viewer. Through this relationship, the viewer becomes a ‘moving body,’ while the installation functions as a living archive of memory and experiences, enriched with migrant narratives.
- Depth Array by Robin Beekman: This work focuses on perception itself, creating layers of light that move and reconfigure space, enhancing the phenomenon of afterimages and leading to an almost hypnotic experience where depth becomes fluid.
- Survival Apparatus by Medea Electronique: Fragments of urban experience – images, sounds, and different perspectives – interweave without culminating in a unified narrative. Instead, they compose a post-digital environment in continuous evolution, where the city and its people transform together, creating a collective experience that never stabilizes.
AR/VR/XR Space: Deeply Experiential Technology
In the AR/VR/XR Space (Cleaning Tanks), the experience moves to a more internal and deeply experiential level, where technology functions not merely as a medium but as an extension of the body and narrative.
- Ceci est mon coeur (a_bahn (lx) with the support of Kultur | lx): The audience is invited to wear special garments with luminous elements that synchronize with the unfolding story, transforming each participant into part of a collective, sensory environment. Through image, sound, and light, the story of a child reconciling with their body unfolds, in an experience based not on words but on emotion and physical presence.
- Hippolytus (in the arms of Aphrodite) by Yolanda Markopoulou: Augmented reality reintroduces the ancient myth as a living experience. Wearing AR glasses, the viewer enters a world where divine vengeance and human desire transform the landscape around them. Live performance, sound design, and digital elements coexist, creating an immersive universe where the boundaries between physical and digital collapse.
Cinematheque: Images in Transition
In the screening area (Cinematheque), the digital art experience takes on a more contemplative, cinematic dimension, where the concept of transformation unfolds through the very language of the image.
- Meta-Morphosis: On Fragmentation: This section depicts a world in dissolution and recomposition. Information is lost in noise, identities fragment, and space transforms into a network of countless, parallel paths. Through this perspective, the viewer is invited to navigate the complexity of a fragmented digital present, where nothing remains stable.
- Meta-Morphosis: At Simulation’s End: The narrative shifts to the limits of simulation itself, where avatars escape their predetermined frameworks, and digital reality begins to decompose. The works explore this ‘out of bounds’ area of the machine, illuminating an incomplete yet transformative digitality.
- Special Screenings: These function as a further extension of this year’s theme, bringing to the forefront works that consciously subvert their own medium. Bodies transform into plant elements, landscapes acquire sonic substance, and handheld camera images evolve into a digitally enhanced, almost chaotic universe. Through this continuous shift, the viewer does not merely observe but is invited to reflect on the forces that shape our perception, identity, and experience in the contemporary world.
Music Experience: Two Stages, One Shared Energy
The festival’s musical experience extends from the interior of the warehouses to the Machine Shop courtyard, creating a unified flow that moves between the experimental and the immediate, the introverted and the extroverted.
- Indoor Stage (21:00-23:00): In an industrial setting, experimental electronic and electroacoustic music takes on an almost intimate dimension. Artists, both established and emerging, work with computers and controllers to create soundscapes that often transcend conventional musical definitions. Sounds that sometimes seem familiar and sometimes not, but always function as an experiential journey. The audience does not stand opposite but within this environment of experimentation, where visuals and sound coexist and transform.
- Outdoor Stage (20:00-21:00): The energy shifts to the outdoor stage with a more immediate and open character. Here, sounds move between pop and underground scenes, without the distance and staging of a large stage. Musicians and audience share the same space, creating a live, personal connection where music functions as common ground.
ADAF Learning: Talks, Workshops, and Panels
In the courtyard, through a series of talks and workshops, the discussion opens around fashion as a living system connecting body, code, and culture, recyclable and 3D printed materials, and the relationship between art and the environment.
Workshops for children and adults – from origami creation to hands-on 3D design and the revival of musical games – transform learning into creative action. Panels bring together artists, professionals, and cultural institutions to exchange ideas on contemporary issues.
INNOVATHENS: Where Art Meets Technology
This space brings together art and pure technology. Web art works, games designed for art lovers, and digital images created entirely on computers coexist with academic collaborations from leading Greek institutions such as ASKT, EKPA, and Ionian University. It’s a space where research and creation coexist.
Through interactive installations, VR, video art, and sound art works from Greece and abroad, such as Chengchi University of Taiwan, an environment is formed where research, education, and artistic practice meet, highlighting how innovation can function as a creative force.
ADAF Kids: Where Digital Art Becomes Play
The Athens Digital Arts Festival may be 22 years old, but it consistently maintains its most creative, childlike side through ADAF KIDS – a space where imagination, technology, and play meet in an interactive digital art playground, full of installations, animation, VR experiences, and educational activities that break the boundaries between art, science, and technology.
In the Machine Shop courtyard, children can paint with water on the Waterlight Graffiti, seeing their movements transform into light, or explore Passengers, a ‘capsule’ where the body and space multiply into infinite reflections. At the same time, workshops emphasize creative participation: from transforming old electronic games into new musical instruments, to interactive debates that cultivate critical thinking through imaginary scenarios, and experiential origami workshops that transform a simple piece of paper into a three-dimensional creation.
See the World Differently
What makes the Athens Digital Arts Festival stand out is not only the variety of its works but the way it invites you to see the world differently. And no, you don’t need to be a digital expert to experience it, as it is designed for everyone: to enter, explore, experiment, interact. The experts will be there, but ADAF belongs equally to anyone who simply wants to discover something new, to try, to feel.
In an era where everything is in constant transformation, from technology to the very concept of experience, the Athens Digital Arts Festival gives you the space to experience it firsthand. And so, metamorphosis ceases to be an abstract concept and becomes something that happens around you, but also within you.
