Athens International Airport (AIA) has once again demonstrated its operational excellence, securing a top position among European airports for punctuality in February 2026. The latest Airport Performance Network (APN) report, released by ACI Europe, reveals that AIA significantly outperformed the regional average, maintaining robust service levels despite widespread weather-related challenges across the continent.

AIA’s Stellar Performance in February 2026

According to the ACI Europe report, Athens International Airport achieved an impressive arrival punctuality rate of 82.7 percent and a departure punctuality rate of 82.5 percent. These figures position AIA as a leading airport in the category of major European hubs, which handle over 25 million passengers annually. This performance stands in stark contrast to the overall European trend, where airport punctuality saw a slight decline compared to the previous year, with only 79 percent of flights arriving on time and 77 percent departing within the standard 15-minute threshold.

AIA’s consistent punctuality is particularly noteworthy when compared to other major European airports such as Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, which experienced lower or more volatile punctuality levels during the same period. This highlights Athens Airport’s effective operational management and resilience in handling air traffic.

Widespread Weather Disruptions Across Europe

February 2026 proved to be a challenging month for European airport operations due to adverse weather conditions. ACI Europe identified snow, fog, and strong winds as the primary factors impacting punctuality across the continent. Several key airports faced significant disruptions:

  • Amsterdam: Affected by snow, fog, and strong winds.
  • Frankfurt: Experienced delays due to inclement weather.
  • Vienna: Operations impacted by adverse conditions.
  • Copenhagen: Faced periods of single-runway operations due to high winds.
  • London Heathrow: Frequently encountered reduced visibility procedures.

Despite these widespread disruptions, the report underscored the overall resilience of airport operations in Europe. Punctuality remained relatively strong, demonstrating the industry’s capacity to adapt to seasonal challenges. Amidst this complex environment, Athens Airport’s ability to maintain solid performance underscores its operational efficiency during a demanding winter period.

Increased Demand and Operational Resilience

ACI Europe also noted that some airports successfully managed increased demand alongside the challenging weather. Zurich, for instance, handled a surge in ski holiday traffic, while airports in the Milan area experienced additional pressure linked to the Winter Olympics, particularly around the opening and closing ceremonies. This demonstrates the robust infrastructure and strategic planning employed by these airports to accommodate fluctuations in passenger volume and unforeseen circumstances.

Athens Airport’s consistent high punctuality ratings, even when faced with regional operational pressures and adverse weather, reflect its commitment to maintaining efficient and reliable air travel services. This strong performance contributes significantly to Greece’s reputation as a reliable and accessible travel destination.

The report also featured insights from Nikos Krinis, managing editor of Greek Travel Pages (GTP) and GTP Headlines, an expert in the Greek tourism and travel industry.
