The Municipality of Arta is taking a firm stance against a prosecutorial order that mandates the transfer of animal waste to the Vlacherena Landfill. Mayor Christoforos Siafakas has expressed strong opposition, highlighting a perceived disregard for local authorities and legal procedures.
Background to the Animal Waste Issue
The animal waste originated from the Gongakis facilities in Corfu. Initially, a portion of this waste was buried, while another part was stored in open areas of a private unit in Gefyra Kalogirou. This situation has been a point of contention for local officials.
Mayor Siafakas’s Strong Reaction
Mayor Siafakas vehemently stated in a public post, “We will not allow anyone to turn Arta into an uncontrolled waste disposal site.” He emphasized that this is the second instance in a short period where decisions affecting the region have been made without the involvement of local authorities.
According to the Mayor, a previous decision to transport the animal waste “under the cover of night” to the Gefyra Kalogirou area was not completed. The new order, which stipulates the transfer of the remaining waste to the Vlacherena Landfill, is deemed “arbitrary and illegal” by Siafakas.
United Front from Arta Mayors
Mayor Siafakas has confirmed that he has contacted all mayors in the Arta Prefecture. They have collectively agreed to appear at the Arta Prosecutor’s Office the following day to submit a Request for Revocation of the order. Furthermore, they are calling for the active participation of all members of the Epirus ASDSA (Regional Waste Management Association).
Protecting Public Interest and Legality
The primary objective of the local authorities is to find a different and lawful method for managing the animal waste, which is currently illegally situated in the area. Their actions are aimed at protecting the public interest and upholding the rule of law.
The mayors are seeking a sustainable and legally compliant solution to this pressing environmental issue, ensuring that Arta’s natural environment and public health are not compromised by improper waste disposal practices.
