Athens, Greece – A solemn ANZAC Day ceremony took place in Athens yesterday, April 26, 2026, gathering a diverse group of officials, community members, and students to pay tribute to the Australians and New Zealanders who served and made the ultimate sacrifice in wartime. The event held particular significance in honouring those who lost their lives defending Greece during the Second World War.

Ceremony at Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery

The commemorative service was hosted by Australian Ambassador Alison Duncan at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery. This historic site serves as a poignant reminder of the shared history between Greece, Australia, and New Zealand, holding the names of 584 Australians and 731 New Zealanders who perished during the campaign.

Distinguished Guests and Community Participation

The ceremony saw robust attendance from both Australian and New Zealand communities residing in Athens, alongside prominent representatives from the Greek Government and armed forces. Among the notable attendees were Secretary General for International Economic Affairs Dimitrios Skalkos, representing the Greek Government, and Chief of Staff of the Hellenic Armed Forces Lieutenant General Konstantinos Bouzos. Lieutenant Colonel Vasileios Tsaparis was present, representing the President of the Hellenic Republic.

Diplomatic representatives, various veterans’ groups, and community organisations also participated, including Greek Australian and Greek New Zealand associations, all of whom laid wreaths in a gesture of profound respect for the fallen soldiers.

Engaging Younger Generations in Historical Memory

A crucial aspect of the ceremony involved the participation of students from local educational institutions. Pupils from St Catherine’s British School, Campion School Athens, and the 9th Elementary School of Alimos were present, underscoring the vital role of younger generations in preserving and understanding historical memory. Their presence highlighted the ongoing commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices made are never forgotten.

Hellenic Armed Forces Support and Reflection on Sacrifice

The event was further enhanced by the support of the Hellenic Armed Forces Guard and Band, whose participation added to the ceremonial gravity and significance of the occasion. The Australian Embassy conveyed that the service provided a crucial moment for reflection on the immense sacrifices made and to express enduring gratitude for those who gave their lives in service.

Ongoing Remembrance and Shared History

ANZAC Day continues to be a powerful reminder of the deep bonds forged through shared wartime experiences. The Athens commemoration served as a testament to the enduring respect and remembrance for the courage and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women, particularly their contributions to the defence of Greece.
