Antiquities Smuggler Arrested in Corfu: Ancient Coins, Knuckleduster Seized

Corfu, March 27 – A 41-year-old man was arrested in Corfu on Tuesday morning, March 24, 2026, on charges of violating legislation concerning the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage, as well as weapons laws. The arrest was carried out by the Northern Greece Organized Crime Unit, following a targeted operation.

Extensive Investigation Leads to Arrest

The operation was preceded by the strategic utilization of intelligence gathered by the Cultural Heritage and Antiquities Protection Office of the Department for Combating Illicit Trafficking in Persons and Goods. A thorough police investigation, including specialized investigative actions and the processing and analysis of pre-investigation material, confirmed the suspect’s criminal activity.

The arrest took place after a police operation in the Corfu area, during which four searches were conducted at residences and other premises. These searches resulted in the discovery and seizure of 22 ancient coins, a knuckleduster, and a mobile phone.

Ancient Coins of Significant Archaeological Value

According to an assessment by the competent Ephorate of Antiquities, the seized coins date from the Classical period (4th century BC) to the Venetian era (17th century AD). These artifacts fall under the protective provisions of the Archaeological Law and are considered to be of particular archaeological value.

The arrested individual was brought before the competent prosecutorial authority. The confiscated coins will be sent to the Ephorate of Antiquities for safekeeping and further archaeological assessment.

Context of Antiquities Smuggling in Greece

Antiquities smuggling remains a significant concern in Greece, a country rich in historical and archaeological treasures. The illegal trade in cultural artifacts not only deprives the nation of its heritage but also fuels organized crime networks. Authorities across Greece are continuously working to combat these illicit activities through enhanced intelligence gathering, cross-border cooperation, and public awareness campaigns.

The successful operation in Corfu underscores the ongoing efforts by Greek law enforcement to protect the country’s invaluable cultural heritage. The seizure of such a diverse collection of coins, spanning several centuries, highlights the persistent threat posed by individuals engaged in the illicit trade of archaeological finds.

The Ephorate of Antiquities plays a crucial role in the identification, preservation, and study of archaeological discoveries. Their expert assessment is vital in determining the historical and monetary value of seized artifacts, ensuring their proper handling and eventual integration into public collections or research. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation in safeguarding cultural treasures for future generations.
