ADEDY Corfu Calls for Mass Rally on February 28th to Commemorate Tempi Tragedy
Corfu, March 1, 2026 – The Corfu branch of ADEDY (Supreme Administration of Civil Servants’ Unions) has issued a call for a large-scale demonstration on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 12:00 PM, at Porta Reala. The rally aims to mark the third anniversary of the tragic Tempi train accident, which claimed the lives of 57 people, mostly young individuals, and to demand accountability for the incident.
The announcement from ADEDY Corfu emphasizes the promise made from the outset: “This crime will not be covered up; we will be the voice of all the dead.” The union pledges to uphold this commitment until the end, ensuring that those responsible are punished and that policies prioritizing profit over safety are overturned.
The Roots of the Tragedy: Privatization and Neglect
ADEDY highlights that the underlying causes of the Tempi tragedy remain unaddressed. They point to successive governments and a state hostile to its citizens, which fragmented the railway system, handed it over to private companies, and left it understaffed, underfunded, and lacking essential safety systems. The European Union is also implicated for promoting the privatization of railways and issuing “safety certificates” for what the union describes as “death trains.”
Three years after the Tempi disaster, the railway system continues to be unsafe. Furthermore, concerns are growing regarding air transport safety, as evidenced by recent incidents. These include a control system blackout at ‘Eleftherios Venizelos’ airport earlier this year and another incident on February 19th, where Athens Approach operated with only one of the three required radars and without backup frequencies. The Hellenic Air Traffic Controllers Association has warned of a potential “Tempi in the air.”
Beyond Tempi: A Broader Crisis of Safety
The union stresses that the Tempi tragedy is not an isolated incident. They refuse to accept the ongoing loss of human lives due to floods and fires, and they cite the deaths of five female workers at the ‘Violanta’ biscuit factory in Trikala. In 2025 alone, the working class recorded 201 fatalities from workplace accidents and hundreds of injuries, many leading to permanent disabilities. ADEDY describes this as an undeclared war waged daily in workplaces, across both the private and public sectors, with workers as victims of a criminal profit-driven policy.
ADEDY also expresses concern for the future of the younger generation, who face insecurity and an uncertain future due to the commercialization of education and healthcare. They highlight teacher shortages, lack of doctors, and studies that offer no real prospects, all while billions of euros are allocated to military equipment and NATO needs, which the union argues are unrelated to the country’s defense.
Call to Action: Fighting for Justice and Change
ADEDY Corfu asserts that true justice for the victims of Tempi, for those who died in their workplaces, and for the children of Greece, will only come through organized struggle. This struggle aims to overturn the policies of privatization, the systematic degradation of public infrastructure responsible for the disaster, and the policies that daily generate new crimes.
The Corfu branch of ADEDY calls on public sector employees to participate en masse and militantly, alongside their unions, in the major rally scheduled for Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 12:00 PM, at Porta Reala.
