1.6 Million Euros Allocated for Water Supply Network Replacement in Corfu Communities

Corfu, June 26, 2026 – A vital project worth 1.6 million euros for the replacement of water supply pipelines in communities within the Corfu Municipal Unit has officially commenced. The contract for the “Urgent Water Supply Works in the Municipal Units of Corfu and Achilleion” was signed between the Corfu Water Utility (DEYAK) and the contractor company “TEDRA.”

The project addresses the critical issue of aging water infrastructure, which has been a source of frequent breakdowns and significant water losses across various areas of Corfu. The existing pipes, constructed primarily between 1980 and 2000, have deteriorated, leading to prolonged water interruptions and inconvenience for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Addressing Decades-Old Infrastructure

The comprehensive initiative involves the replacement of a total of 8,860 meters of old water pipelines. These pipelines, due to their age and condition, are responsible for numerous issues within the network. The implementation of modern technology and materials is expected to drastically minimize leaks and ensure a continuous water supply to many areas previously plagued by disruptions.

Key Interventions Across Four Central Actions:

  • A. Sotiriotissa Area: Replacement of 1,410 meters of old PVC pipe (dating back to 1980) with a modern 3rd generation polyethylene (PE) pipe, with a diameter of Ø250mm and pressure rating of PN 16atm.
  • B. Corfu Town (Nikolaou Armeni Street): Replacement of 1,400 meters of the main iron pipe (installed in 2000) with a new, highly durable ductile iron pipe, with a diameter of Ø500mm.
  • C. Rankiou Area (between Potamos and Evropouloi): Replacement of 1,750 meters of old iron pipe (circa 1980) with a new 3rd generation PE pipe, with a diameter of Ø110mm and pressure rating of PN 16atm.
  • D. Achilleion Municipal Unit: Total replacement of 4,300 meters of old iron pipes (circa 1980), distributed as follows:
    • Gastouri Settlement: 600 meters of new 3rd generation PE pipe (Ø110mm / PN 16atm).
    • From Achilleion Reservoir to Pikoulatika: 3,700 meters of new 3rd generation PE pipe (Ø140mm). To manage hydrostatic pressures, the first 1,000 meters will have a PN 25atm resistance, and the remaining 2,700 meters will have a PN 20atm resistance.

The project is a crucial step towards modernizing Corfu’s water infrastructure, aiming to improve the quality of life for its inhabitants and enhance the experience for its visitors. The use of advanced materials is anticipated to provide a long-term solution to the persistent problems of water loss and supply interruptions.
