Corfu Receives Over €9 Million for Disaster Recovery Efforts

Corfu, June 20, 2026 – In a decisive development aimed at bolstering Corfu’s resilience and repairing the extensive damages inflicted by last winter’s natural disasters, the Ionian Islands Region has announced the approval of new funding exceeding €9 million. This allocation is in addition to the already progressing recovery program.

Specifically, €4.5 million has been approved for projects under the jurisdiction of the Corfu Regional Unit. An additional €4.8 million has been granted to the Municipalities of North, Central, and South Corfu, enabling them to proceed with their own essential interventions.

Addressing Critical Issues Caused by Severe Weather

These new funds are earmarked for tackling severe issues that primarily arose from intense rainfall and extreme weather events during the winter. Key areas of focus include coastal erosion, damage to public infrastructure, and the impact on private properties. It is important to note that for the initial wave of disasters, the recovery process has already advanced significantly, with projects totaling €10 million currently in the bidding phase and awaiting approval from the Court of Auditors.

The Governor of the Ionian Islands, Giannis Trepeklis, emphasized the critical importance of rapidly completing these procedures, stating, “Our immediate concern is to protect our island. The ground is ‘wounded,’ and there is no room for delay, especially with summer approaching, when intense weather phenomena are now frequent in our region.”

Expedited Procedures for Project Implementation

The technical services of the Region have already finalized the relevant studies, and the tender documents are prepared. In the immediate future, calls for bids will be issued to select contractors, with the objective of commencing restoration work for this second phase of funding as soon as possible.

This substantial investment underscores the commitment of regional authorities to safeguard Corfu’s natural beauty and infrastructure, ensuring the continued well-being of its residents and the island’s vital tourism sector. The swift action aims to mitigate future risks and restore affected areas to their pre-disaster state, reinforcing Corfu’s ability to withstand environmental challenges.

The funding is expected to cover a wide range of projects, from reinforcing coastal defenses to repairing damaged roads and public buildings. Local communities are eagerly anticipating the commencement of these works, which will bring much-needed relief and a sense of security to areas heavily impacted by the winter storms.

The Ionian Islands Region continues to monitor weather patterns and implement proactive measures to enhance the island’s resilience against the increasingly frequent and intense natural phenomena. This comprehensive approach ensures that Corfu remains a safe and attractive destination for both residents and visitors.
