Ionian Islands Region: New Steps for Road Safety Through TRANSPORT.SAF.ER

Corfu, June 19, 2026 – The Ionian Islands Region is actively implementing the TRANSPORT.SAF.ER project – “Upgrading multimodal transport and road safety in the cross-border area,” co-funded by the Interreg IPA Greece-Albania 2021-2027 Programme. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and multimodal transport across the Greece-Albania border region.

Second Working Meeting Held in Corfu

The second Steering Committee meeting for the TRANSPORT.SAF.ER project recently took place in Corfu, hosted by the Ionian Islands Region. During the meeting, partners presented their implementation progress, reviewed the status of tender procedures, and agreed on the next steps. The meeting was coordinated by Ms. Aimilia Moschou, Deputy Regional Governor for European Programmes, Digital Transformation & Innovation, and Ms. Kyriaki Kyriaki, European Programmes Officer of the Ionian Islands Region. Officials from the Region of Epirus, the Region of Vlora, and the Joint Secretariat of the Programme also participated.

New Roundabout in Campanialou, Corfu

A central component of the Ionian Islands Region’s involvement in the project is the construction of a new roundabout in the Campanialou area of Corfu. This intervention is designed to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and create safer travel conditions for both residents and visitors moving between Corfu town, the airport, and the northern parts of Corfu.

Significant Progress in Implementation

To date, significant maturation stages of the intervention have been completed. These include the assignment of necessary studies, approval of the environmental study, preparation for the completion of the hydraulic study, settlement of property issues, and updating of tender documents.

Next Steps and Project Acceleration

The next crucial step is the completion of these actions and the announcement of the open tender for the construction of the roundabout, with a target publication date by the end of July 2026. Concurrently, the Ionian Islands Region is preparing the assignment process for communication and dissemination activities, which will include informational campaigns, publicity materials, and promotional events. For the second half of 2026, the project implementation is expected to accelerate, focusing on the construction works of the Campanialou roundabout and other supporting project activities.

Project Enters Mature Implementation Phase

The TRANSPORT.SAF.ER project is now entering its most mature implementation phase, with an emphasis on initiating major technical interventions. This will substantially contribute to improving road safety and accessibility in Corfu and the wider cross-border area. The TRANSPORT.SAF.ER project is co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the Interreg IPA Greece-Albania 2021-2027 Programme.
