Corfu, June 15, 2026 – Zisimos 1928, a name synonymous with Corfu’s social and cultural life for nearly a century, has embarked on a new chapter, reopening as a Café Restaurant at its historic location on the Liston. This revival aims to honor its rich legacy while once again becoming a beloved meeting point for both Corfiots and visitors to the island.
A Legacy of Hospitality Reimagined
Since its establishment in 1928, Zisimos has been more than just a café or a restaurant; it has been a space intertwined with the memories of generations of Corfiots. It was a place where people met, conversed, celebrated, and became an integral part of the city’s daily rhythm. Today, almost a century later, the new Zisimos seeks to preserve this philosophy of hospitality.
The current endeavor focuses on maintaining the timeless aesthetics and attention to detail that defined the original establishment. White tablecloths, a classic ambiance, and a sense of a bygone era have been consciously retained, aiming to evoke a hospitality rooted in care, authenticity, and nostalgia. The emphasis is on the value of small details, the beauty of simplicity, and the joy of sharing moments in a space imbued with nearly a century of memories.
A Space for Every Moment
The revitalized Zisimos is designed to be an inclusive space, open to everyone for every moment of the day. From a morning coffee or brunch to lunch, a light meal, a glass of wine, an aperitif, dinner, or even a dessert, the establishment offers a diverse culinary experience. Patrons can once again savor beloved flavors, including the ‘Kyrios Nikos Variety’ and the famous ‘Sokolatina,’ or enjoy a traditional Greek coffee under the shade of the Liston’s trees, overlooking the historic arches of the city.
Community Response and Future Outlook
The reopening has generated significant discussion among the local community, with some expressing strong opinions regarding the changes. Comments from patrons on social media and local forums highlight a desire for the new Zisimos to stay true to its traditional roots.
- One commenter, ‘Zisimos’, suggested, “Zisimos never had white tablecloths. Put back the toast of Mr. Nikos with salad and bakery bread, old-style mocha, cheese pie, and ouzomedes like before. Otherwise, you will also sink like the previous ones.”
- Another, ‘Elena’, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Please, remove the tablecloths. It’s an eyesore for every Corfiot. It’s a lack of respect for our habits, our past, our Corfiot identity!!! Where have you heard of a tablecloth under the trees of the Liston!!!”
- ‘Corfiot Citizen’ added, “Who said we would sit in the shop with musicians? At most, some low music just for the atmosphere under the arches. Essentially, we want our peace, to have a chat and some jokes with friends. As for the white tablecloths, we are not bothered. You see them and you don’t know what ‘bill’ will come. Always with good intentions and respect for the shop and those who serve the people.”
- ‘Politis’ remarked, “Your neighboring cafe has a very decent meze for ouzo or tsipouro for 5€. And of course, it increases every year. But so be it. It’s honest. If you think that with tablecloths and gourmet dishes you will attract the Corfiot, then I fear that you too will fall into… shallows. Unfortunately, the name alone is not enough. Affordable prices and simple things for simple people. That’s what our visitors are looking for too.”
The management acknowledges that the revival effort is ongoing, with the goal of gradually reintroducing beloved elements and creating a meeting point worthy of its history. They emphasize that Zisimos remains a cherished landmark, inextricably linked with the island’s history and memories.
