Corfu, June 13 – Images circulating on local social media depict long queues and significant delays at Corfu’s ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Airport, with some passengers waiting up to five hours on the tarmac. These prolonged waits are a recurring issue, particularly for non-Schengen travelers undergoing passport control, and are exacerbated by the peak tourist season.

Record Tourist Season Brings Unprecedented Challenges

Corfu is currently experiencing one of its busiest tourist seasons, with official data from Fraport indicating higher passenger arrivals and departures compared to the record-breaking year of 2025. This surge in tourism, while economically beneficial, has put immense pressure on the airport’s infrastructure and staffing.

The problem is most acute when a large number of flights arrive within a short period, a frequent occurrence on a weekly basis. Aircraft with capacities ranging from 175 to 235 passengers often find themselves on the tarmac simultaneously, leading to bottlenecks at passport control.

Harsh Conditions for Waiting Passengers

Passengers are enduring these lengthy waits under challenging conditions, with midday temperatures on the tarmac often reaching extreme levels that can be harmful to human health. The frustration among travelers is palpable, as many express their dissatisfaction with the situation.

Passenger Traffic Soars in 2026

Despite the operational challenges, Corfu continues to attract a significant number of visitors. From the start of the tourist season in March until May of this year, a total of 625,494 international passengers have passed through ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Airport. This highlights the island’s growing popularity as a tourist destination.

Similar Issues Across Greek Airports

Corfu is not alone in facing these issues. Similar scenes of overcrowding and delays are being reported at other major airports across Greece, particularly on the Ionian Islands, with Zakynthos also experiencing significant passenger inconvenience.

Call for Solutions from Authorities

The ongoing delays and the discomfort experienced by passengers underscore the urgent need for effective solutions from the relevant authorities. While the record tourist numbers are a positive sign for the local economy, addressing the operational inefficiencies at the airport is crucial to ensure a positive experience for all visitors.

Local media outlets continue to highlight the issue, putting pressure on airport management and government officials to implement measures that will alleviate the congestion and improve passenger flow, especially during peak travel times. The long-term sustainability of Corfu’s tourism industry depends on its ability to manage such high volumes of visitors efficiently and comfortably.
