The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands is continuing its rigorous checks on waste management practices, resulting in 10 new fines issued last week for various violations of the Cleanliness Regulation.
Ongoing Enforcement by Cleaning and Recycling Services
The Cleaning and Recycling Service of the Municipality has been actively monitoring compliance with waste disposal rules. These latest fines underscore the municipality’s commitment to maintaining public hygiene and environmental protection across Corfu.
Details of the Fines Issued:
- Non-minimisation of waste volume by businesses (Article 13.3 & 13.7.a): One (1) violation was recorded. The fine for this offense is 400.00 € per item, bag, or package. This regulation aims to ensure that commercial establishments reduce the bulk of their waste before disposal.
- Improper disposal in areas without bins / Dumping in public spaces (Article 7.5): Two (2) violations were issued. These cases involved waste not being placed in durable, closed plastic bags according to the collection schedule, or being left outside private property, on the street, or on the sidewalk. The fine is 200.00 € per item, bag, or package.
- Disposal of waste outside recycling bins (Article 11): Four (4) violations were recorded, specifically targeting businesses and stores. The fine for this type of infringement is 100.00 €. This highlights the importance of proper segregation of recyclable materials.
- Waste outside bins (Article 7.4): Three (3) violations were issued for placing waste directly outside the designated bins. Each violation carries a fine of 100.00 € per bag, item, or package.
The Municipality reminds all citizens and businesses of the prohibitions outlined in the Cleanliness Regulation:
- Disposal of waste outside bins or in public spaces is strictly forbidden.
- Disposal of recyclable packaging in green (mixed waste) bins is prohibited.
- Disposal of mixed waste in recycling bins is not allowed.
- Disposal of unbroken cardboard boxes is also forbidden.
The Municipality emphasizes that maintaining cleanliness, protecting the environment, and safeguarding public health are collective responsibilities and demonstrate practical respect for fellow citizens. Detailed information regarding the Cleanliness Regulation is available on the official website of the Municipality.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve waste management and ensure a cleaner environment for both residents and visitors in Corfu. The continuous checks and penalties aim to deter improper waste disposal and encourage adherence to established regulations.
