With steady steps, the construction of the Thinalion Sports Center in the Municipality of North Corfu is progressing. This major development project aspires to become the most significant sports complex in North Corfu and one of the most modern sports centers in the Ionian Islands.
First Major Intervention: Central Pitch Replacement
The first major intervention, the replacement of the central pitch’s turf, represents the most visible step in a broader plan that transforms the sports facilities of the Municipality of North Corfu into a modern Sports Center. This center will be capable of hosting a multitude of sports activities and events, while also contributing to the development of sports tourism and the local economy.
This project is being implemented thanks to the close cooperation between the Municipality of North Corfu and the Ionian Islands Region. Funding is largely covered by regional resources, while a significant portion of the work is carried out with the Municipality’s own resources and direct labor, with anticipated Philodimos program support.
New Thinalion Sports Center Features
The new Sports Center will include:
- A modern football field with new, high-standard turf.
- A six-lane track with appropriate sub-base and tartan surface, meeting modern athletic requirements.
- Specially designed areas for track and field events, with two long jump pits.
- Facilities for pole vault and high jump.
- Facilities for hurdle races and training.
- A state-of-the-art indoor gymnasium, designed to accommodate multiple sports activities and events with ultra-modern specifications, featuring an air-supported dome.
- Upgraded and modernized stands.
- Construction of a 45-meter long canopy to protect spectators.
- Complete renovation and beautification of the changing rooms according to modern standards of functionality and safety.
- A separate entrance for access to the stands and better management of sports events.
- An auxiliary field measuring 45 x 90 meters behind the stands.
- A small cricket training ground, enhancing Corfu’s long athletic tradition in this sport.
- New elaborate fencing.
- Recreational and walking areas for athletes, visitors, and families.
- An eight-acre parking area, capable of serving large sports events and functions.
Furthermore, the development of the Sports Center is directly linked to the unique natural environment of the area. The plan includes the creation and promotion of routes and paths that will connect the facilities with the Antinioti Lagoon, a Natura network area, Agia Aikaterini, Agios Spyridonas, and the unique beaches of the area, combining sports, environmental awareness, and mild tourism development.
Impact on Local Sports and Community
The Thinalion Sports Center of the Municipality of North Corfu will become the permanent home and training center for Thinaliakos, the Thinaliakos Academy, the football teams of the area, and the development center for sports activities including track and field, basketball, volleyball, handball, cricket, and many other sports, creating a unified core of athletic activity for the new generation of the Municipality of North Corfu.

Today, with the Thinalion Sports Center of the Municipality of North Corfu, the Municipality is taking an even bigger step, creating a sports infrastructure of strategic importance for the entire North Corfu.
This project offers multiple benefits for the region. It strengthens mass sports, supports sports clubs, creates new prospects for youth, upgrades the quality of life for residents, and gives new developmental momentum to the Municipality.
The implementation of the Thinalion Sports Center in the Municipality of North Corfu is further proof that, even under difficult and often adverse conditions, the Municipality of North Corfu continues to invest in people, in the new generation, and in the creative forces of the region.
