Corfu, Greece – June 10, 2026 – The Corfu Port Authority (OLKE S.A.) has reported another highly positive year in the cruise sector, with a significant increase in passenger traffic and cruise ship calls during the first five months of 2026. This confirms the port’s continuously strengthening role as a key gateway to the Adriatic and a strategic hub for Greek shipping.
Significant Growth Despite Geopolitical Challenges
According to consolidated data from OLKE S.A., 135 cruise ship calls were recorded from January to May 2026, compared to 127 in the corresponding period of 2025, representing a 6.3% increase. Concurrently, total passenger traffic reached 225,018 passengers, up from 203,264 the previous year, marking a 10.7% increase.
It is noteworthy that these results were achieved during a period when geopolitical developments in the wider region affected international cruising, leading to seven cancellations of cruise ship calls at Corfu Port between January and May 2026. These cancellations accounted for 12,757 passengers, making the recorded growth even more significant.
Corfu: A Dynamic Mediterranean Cruise Destination
The continuous increase in traffic confirms Corfu’s dynamism as one of the most popular cruise destinations in the Mediterranean. This growth simultaneously boosts the local economy, tourism, and businesses on the island.
The port’s developmental trajectory was also highlighted during OLKE S.A.’s participation in the international shipping exhibition Posidonia 2026, where the management’s strategic vision for further strengthening Corfu’s position on the map of international maritime transport was presented.
Vision for the ‘Great Port of the Adriatic’
During the exhibition, the CEO of Corfu Port Authority S.A., Dimitris Apergis, presented the vision for establishing Corfu as the ‘Great Port of the Adriatic’. This vision aims for a modern and competitive port that will play a leading role in cruising, maritime tourism, yachting, and maritime transport in the wider region.
As he pointed out, Corfu’s strategic geographical location, combined with existing and planned investments and infrastructure, creates the conditions for further enhancing the port’s role as a benchmark for the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Future Plans
In parallel, the Corfu Port Authority is systematically implementing its development plan, aiming for further upgrading of infrastructure and services. In this context, two significant studies with a total budget of 414,000 euros, concerning the new Cruise Passenger Terminal and the new Non-Schengen Passenger Terminal, are being completed in 2026. These interventions represent a significant step towards the future upgrading of port facilities, improving passenger service, and further enhancing the port’s competitiveness.
During discussions at the Hellenic Ports Association booth at Posidonia 2026, the importance of cooperation among ports, sustainable development, and the adoption of modern practices contributing to the competitiveness of the Greek port system was highlighted.
Economic Impact and Future Outlook
It is recalled that, according to a study recently presented by OLKE S.A. in cooperation with the Democritus University of Thrace, the total added value from the port’s operation and cruise activity to the local economy exceeded 190 million euros during the 2023-2024 period, highlighting the port’s importance as a development driver for Corfu and the Ionian Islands.
Dimitris Apergis, CEO of Corfu Port Authority S.A., stated: “The results of the first months of 2026 confirm the dynamic course of Corfu Port and the significant prospects emerging for the future. Our goal is to leverage Corfu’s comparative advantages and further strengthen its role as the Great Port of the Adriatic, investing in modern infrastructure, quality services, and sustainable development for the benefit of the local community, the economy, and the Greek port system.”
The Corfu Port Authority continues to implement a comprehensive development and outward-looking plan, aiming for the further upgrading of the port and strengthening Corfu’s position as one of the most important port and tourist hubs in the Mediterranean.
