Athens Transforms with New Sports Landmarks: Ellinikon, Votanikos, and Veikou Park Lead the Way
After two decades, a crisis, and a pandemic, Athens is embarking on a new era of urban transformation, with a strong focus on sports facilities. From Ellinikon to Votanikos, state-of-the-art installations featuring cutting-edge technology are rapidly taking shape, promising to redefine the city’s athletic landscape.
The New Panathinaikos Stadium in Votanikos: A Decades-Long Dream Realized
In the industrial zone of Elaionas-Votanikos, a decades-long dream is becoming a reality: a super-regional sports hub centered around a new UEFA-standard stadium. This project includes new facilities for amateur sports and a comprehensive network of infrastructure designed to redefine the western axis of Athens.
Currently, construction is in full swing, with the stands already installed for the highly anticipated 40,000-seat stadium, which is visibly prominent in the area. New roads are being constructed, and excavation work is ongoing. The current timeline projects the stadium’s completion by April 2027, with the gradual completion of the remaining infrastructure and full integration into Votanikos’ new urban landscape to follow.
The New Sports Center at Ellinikon: A Hub for Public Athletics
From the outset of the mega urban regeneration project in the Southern Suburbs, the construction of new sports facilities has been a top priority. As Odysseus Athanasiou, CEO of Lamda Development, previously stated, the goal is for “people to start coming, experiencing Ellinikon, and engaging in sports, which we consider very important.” This summer, the first impressions of the new sports ecosystem within The Ellinikon’s new city will be revealed.
Cutting-edge technology and high-standard facilities are the hallmarks of these infrastructures. Spanning approximately 287,000 square meters within the park, the development includes six football fields (with hybrid and synthetic FIFA Quality Pro turf), two outdoor basketball courts, two tennis courts, and a training track. In a later phase (after summer 2026), the Sports Park facilities will be complemented by a swimming pool (designed with the ability to be divided in two by an air barrier), a rehabilitation center, and athlete dormitories. Significantly, all these ultra-modern facilities will be freely accessible to the public.
The New Indoor Gym in Veikou Park: Bioclimatic Design for the Community
It’s not just the ongoing metro station constructions that are stirring dust in Galatsi. Within Veikou Park, the old indoor basketball court has been demolished to make way for a new one, featuring a modern, environmentally friendly design philosophy. This is happening alongside upgrades to the adjacent track.
Specifically, the new Indoor Gym will primarily be dedicated to basketball but not exclusively. According to announcements, it will cover a total area of 4,000 square meters. Its distinctive feature will be its bioclimatic design, emphasizing reduced energy footprint, natural lighting, and improved indoor ventilation. The aim is for the building to harmonize with its surroundings and the greenery of Veikou Park. The project is expected to be delivered in May 2028.
Athens’ Commitment to Sports and Urban Development
These ambitious projects signify Athens’ commitment to fostering a new era of urban development, where modern sports infrastructure plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for its residents and attracting international events. The city is not only building new venues but creating new landmarks that will shape its identity for decades to come.
