Athens, May 31, 2026 – A groundbreaking initiative, dubbed “Starline,” aims to revolutionize European travel by creating a “mega-metro” network that will connect Athens with approximately 40 cities across the continent. This ambitious project, developed by the think tank “21st Europe,” seeks to establish a 22,000-kilometer high-speed rail system, significantly reducing carbon emissions and offering a sustainable alternative to air travel.
Europe’s Green Leap: High-Speed Rail for a Sustainable Future
Europe currently accounts for approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with aviation contributing about 3%. While this may seem small, air travel remains a significant climate burden on the continent. In contrast, high-speed trains emit up to 90% less CO₂ per journey, yet they often remain a secondary option for many travelers, even for short distances.
The Starline project directly addresses this disparity by promoting a massive shift towards high-speed rail. Its proponents envision a future where rail travel is not only more environmentally friendly but also more efficient and accessible than flying, especially for inter-European journeys. This initiative aligns with the EU’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Connecting the Continent: Five Major Lines and Enhanced Connectivity
Based on the Trans-European Transport Network, the Starline project will connect major hubs at speeds of 200 km/h and above. This means travelers could journey from Berlin to Copenhagen in 4 hours instead of 7, and from Sofia to Athens in 6 hours instead of 13 hours and 40 minutes. New cross-border connections will facilitate faster travel, such as Paris to Lisbon via Madrid, and improve connectivity between the Baltic capitals.
The project comprises five main lines:
- Line A: From Naples to Helsinki
- Line B: From Lisbon to Kyiv, with an intermediate stop in Madrid
- Line C: From Madrid to Istanbul, with a stop in Barcelona
- Line D: From Dublin to Kyiv
- Line E: From Milan to Oslo
This network will integrate all European capitals and other major cities like Marseille, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Munich into a cohesive system, resembling an urban metro rather than the fragmented national systems currently in place.
A New Era for European Rail Travel
Europe boasts a rich railway heritage, from the “golden age” of night trains to Interrail, which attracts hundreds of thousands of travelers annually. However, international rail connections often remain fragmented, slow, and frequently more expensive than air travel. Starline aims to transform this reality by offering a unified travel experience across the continent.
Green Energy and Smart Management
The proposal extends beyond speed. It incorporates the use of renewable energy sources – solar, wind, and battery storage – to power stations and infrastructure. It also includes “smart” energy management, with storage of surplus production and real-time optimization of consumption, reducing costs and increasing energy resilience.
A Unified Experience for All Passengers
One of the most compelling aspects of Starline is its provision for common trains, stations, ticketing systems, and services across all lines. The new trains will feature quiet zones, workspaces, and family units, eliminating traditional classes and promoting a more democratic travel experience.
Comfort on long distances is paramount: ergonomic seating, integrated cafe areas, and shared spaces will transform the journey into an experience rather than mere transportation. Additionally, the network will include dedicated cargo transport areas, reducing the need for short-haul air freight and alleviating road network congestion.
A European Challenge with Global Impact
Should this ambitious project come to fruition, it will represent the first comprehensive transnational railway infrastructure in European history. Its creators emphasize that its success will depend not only on technical excellence but also on political will and cooperation among member states.
In an era where the climate crisis demands radical solutions, Starline proposes a path that combines ecological sensitivity, technological innovation, and European cohesion. It envisions a train that transports not just people or goods, but the very idea of a more united and sustainable Europe.
