Posidonia 2026: Record Participation in Athens Amid Growing Challenges for Global Shipping
Athens, May 29, 2026 – Posidonia 2026 is poised to open its doors on June 1st, welcoming over 40,000 professionals from the global shipping industry to Athens. This year’s event is expected to be the largest and most anticipated in the institution’s long history, highlighting an industry actively transforming in response to geopolitical instability and structural changes.
The conference program of Posidonia 2026 will address critical issues ranging from insurance and risk management to the energy transition, digitalization, and maritime security. This comprehensive agenda reflects the significant challenges and opportunities facing the global shipping sector.
Global Shipping at the Forefront of International Attention
Against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical challenges in the Middle East, global shipping remains at the center of international attention. The strategic role of maritime transport in global trade, energy security, and economic stability has been underscored by recent events, including hundreds of ships being trapped for months in the Strait of Hormuz and immense pressure on energy supply chains. These circumstances have once again tested the resilience of the shipping industry on a global scale.
Vasilis Kikilias, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, emphasized the broader societal impact of the industry: “Greek shipping does not concern only a few people. It concerns society itself, development, jobs and the everyday lives of citizens. Posidonia constitutes the leading international meeting point where critical decisions are discussed regarding the future of global shipping, energy and the economy, with a direct impact on local communities and people’s lives.”
In this exceptionally complex and critical environment, the importance of Posidonia has never been greater, nor has the contribution of shipping been so decisive for the global community.
Greek Shipping: A Pillar of Stability
Ms. Melina Travlos, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, highlighted the vital role of Greek shipping: “In an era of international challenges and multiple disruptions, Greek Shipping, as a pillar of stability, resilience and global continuity, connects the world and leads with vision, determination and institutional responsibility. The strategic value of shipping is also highlighted at Posidonia 2026, an institution of prestige that promotes meaningful dialogue and cooperation for shaping the future of the sector. With pride, we welcome to Greece, homeland of the world’s strongest shipping industry, the international maritime community.”
Mr. Ioannis C. Lyras, Chairman of the Posidonia Organizing Committee, noted the challenging global context: “The 29th biennial exhibition and the parallel events of Posidonia are taking place during a period in which geopolitical conflicts and confrontations are at their highest level since the historically pivotal collapse of the Soviet Union 35 years ago, while attacks against commercial shipping have, unfortunately, reached their highest level since the Age of Sail. Within this worrying (and rather discouraging) environment, we are happy and proud to host a maritime week which, once again, brings together so many national delegations from all over the world with the aim of cooperating to promote peaceful trade, goodwill and coexistence.”
Record Participation and Technological Advancements
This year’s exhibition will host a record 24 national pavilions, including the official participation of Germany and Italy, returning after a long absence. The event will span 45,000 square meters at the Athens Metropolitan Expo, featuring 2,227 exhibitors from 83 countries and territories, representing every sector of the international shipping industry. This marks an almost 9% increase in exhibitors compared to the 2024 event.
The rapid technological transformation of shipping will be prominently displayed at Posidonia 2026, with over 30 exhibitors showcasing Artificial Intelligence applications and capabilities specifically designed for maritime activities. Furthermore, the accelerating transition towards sustainability and regulatory compliance is driving strong demand for environmental (“green”) technologies, with 100 exhibitors presenting solutions that support the sector’s path toward zero emissions.
Speaking at the press conference before the event’s opening, Theodoros Vokos, CEO of Posidonia Exhibitions S.A., stated: “It is important to emphasize that, despite initial concerns, the Gulf crisis did not affect us and all exhibitors and visitors from the Gulf region confirmed their attendance. However, this crisis also highlighted the resilience of our shipping industry, which not only responded effectively to the challenges but also confirmed its importance for the global economy, continuing uninterrupted operations and support for international trade under adverse conditions.”
Economic Impact and Community Engagement
Mr. Vokos also stressed the broader economic significance of this year’s event, noting that Posidonia 2026 has already begun, with conferences, business meetings, receptions, and networking events taking place weeks before the official opening. “The economic impact of this year’s Posidonia on the Greek economy will be greater than ever before,” he added. “Not only do we expect approximately 40,000 participants overall, but also a significant extension of international visitors’ stays in Greece due to the expanded conference program and the sporting events of the Posidonia Games. We estimate that the total economic turnover generated by Posidonia 2026 will significantly exceed 100 million euros.”
Mr. Giannis Moralis, Mayor of Piraeus, expressed his city’s enthusiasm: “In Piraeus, we welcome with great pleasure the global maritime community to Posidonia 2026, an institution inextricably linked to the history and identity of the city. As a timeless center of Greek shipping and one of Europe’s most important ports, Piraeus continues to serve as a reference point for international maritime activity, while simultaneously showcasing its modern and outward-looking profile. Within the framework of this year’s event, our city is also hosting the particularly popular Posidonia Running Event and Posidonia Cup, further strengthening the connection between Posidonia and Piraeus.”
High-Level International Participation and Sustainability Focus
Posidonia 2026 will once again attract an exceptionally high level of international participation. The President of Panama, accompanied by members of his Cabinet, will attend the Exhibition, alongside the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the European Commissioner for Transport, and more than ten ministers and deputy ministers representing maritime nations from around the world.
The event is also strengthening its commitment to sustainability, receiving ISO certification as a sustainable event for the third consecutive year, making it the first exhibition in Greece to achieve this distinction.
The program of parallel Posidonia events continues to expand significantly, with approximately 70 events scheduled. Many will take place outside the exhibition venue due to unprecedented demand. Nuclear energy as a potential maritime fuel is emerging as a main topic, with a special high-level event examining the role of advanced nuclear technologies in commercial shipping and offshore energy production.
The Posidonia Games are also expanding this year with the introduction of the cycling race Posidonia Tour, and proceeds from all sporting events will continue to support charitable organizations and NGOs.
Posidonia 2026 is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, and the Union of Greek Shipowners, with the support of the Municipality of Piraeus and the Committee for Greek Shipping Cooperation.
