Corfu Weather Forecast: Heat Dome in Europe, Thermal Storms Possible

Corfu is set to experience generally good weather in the coming days, extending until Sunday. However, there is a possibility of thermal storms developing in the afternoon and evening during this period. This forecast comes as Europe grapples with a significant ‘heat dome’ phenomenon.

Europe Under a Heat Dome

In recent days, Europe has been experiencing exceptionally high temperatures due to a persistent high-pressure system, referred to as a ‘heat dome.’ This system is effectively blocking lower pressure systems that would typically bring rain and cooler weather. The heat dome, originating from the Sahara, has trapped hot air across the continent, leading to a surge in temperatures. This has resulted in numerous heat-related deaths, dozens of cases of heat exhaustion, and tropical nights, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula.

Corfu Largely Unaffected by the European Heatwave

Despite the widespread heat across Europe, current meteorological data suggests that Corfu will remain largely unaffected by this extreme weather phenomenon. While the rest of Europe anticipates lower pressure systems and a drop in temperatures with rainfall from the weekend, Corfu’s forecast remains relatively stable.

Thursday’s Weather Outlook for Corfu

Thursday on Corfu will be characterized by abundant sunshine. Winds are expected to be calm in the morning. Before noon, they will shift to southwesterly at up to 3 Beaufort, and then to northwesterly at up to 4 Beaufort from midday. Wind intensity will decrease late in the evening. The maximum temperature during the day will reach 29-30°C, with a minimum of 16°C. Low concentrations of African dust will be present in the atmosphere. Humidity levels will be high throughout the day and night, reaching up to 100% in the evening.

Challenges in Long-Term Forecasting

Meteorological predictions are being made gradually due to the formation of thermal storms during the warmer hours of the day on the mainland, which makes long-term forecasting challenging. This dynamic weather pattern requires continuous monitoring and updated forecasts.

Anticipated Changes Across Europe

From the weekend, other parts of Europe are expected to see the arrival of low-pressure systems. These systems are projected to bring a welcome drop in temperatures and much-needed rainfall, offering some relief from the ongoing heatwave. However, Corfu’s weather patterns are expected to diverge from this trend, maintaining its relatively stable conditions.

Residents and visitors in Corfu are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, especially concerning the potential for localized thermal storms. While the island is largely spared from the extreme heat affecting other parts of Europe, caution is always recommended during periods of changing weather conditions.

Further updates on the weather situation will be provided as new meteorological data becomes available.
