Justice Square, located on Panepistimiou Street between Arsaki and Santarosa streets in Athens, has received a new look. The Municipality of Athens carried out extensive restoration, damage repair, cleaning of facilities, and new plantings in the square.

A Collaborative Effort: Municipality of Athens and Visa

According to the official press release, the project was implemented within the framework of the “Visa for Athens” program, a partnership between the Municipality of Athens and Visa.

Athens Mayor, Haris Doukas, stated: “Justice Square, a landmark in the city center, is re-entering the map of everyday life in Athens. For decades, it was connected with public life, democratic expression, and the daily movement of the city. However, for years it remained a forgotten space. With the valuable contribution of Visa, we proceeded with the substantial restoration of the square, proving that collaborations with a social footprint can return value to the city itself.”

Antony Cahill, CEO & Regional President, Visa Europe, commented: “Visa facilitates seamless and secure transactions for citizens and businesses every day. Through our partnership with the Municipality of Athens, we are putting our commitment into practice, supporting local commerce, improving accessibility, and enhancing the daily experience of residents and visitors.”

The Upgraded Image of Justice Square

The Municipality of Athens is systematically proceeding with the upgrade of squares, parks, and public spaces. In recent years, within the framework of its cooperation with Visa, interventions have included the creation and reconstruction of playgrounds, as well as improvements to school infrastructure and kindergartens in Athens.

The “Visa for Athens” program aims to support actions that upgrade the city and contribute to improving the quality of life for residents.

Detailed Restoration Works

The works carried out in Justice Square include:

  • Excavation and replacement of all full-length, 3-meter marble steps on the right staircase.
  • Restoration of damage to planters.
  • Installation of marble fillets and painting of all five planters.
  • Replacement of worn marble paving stones in the center of the square.
  • Sanding and cleaning of all marble benches.
  • Cleaning and removal of corrosion products and biological deposits.
  • Application of special protection with microcrystalline wax and anti-graffiti on the Bronze Statue of Alekos Panagoulis, a work by Achilles Vasileiou, as well as on the Bronze Sculpture “Nike IV,” a work by Kyriakos Kampadakis.
  • Installation of an automatic irrigation system.
  • Earthworks and lawn seeding.
  • Installation of stakes and phytotechnical interventions in planters.
  • Planting of 18 new trees, 17 shrubs, and 300 succulent flowering plants (Mesembryanthemum), provided by the Green Department of the Municipality of Athens.

These comprehensive interventions aim to restore the square to its former glory and enhance its functionality and aesthetic appeal for both residents and visitors.
