The art of George Koulouris returns to the forefront through a unique painting exhibition hosted at the Tscichritzis Visual Arts Foundation in Kifissia, Athens, from May 19 to May 31, 2026. This artistic encounter presents the work of one of the most significant representatives of post-war painting from Corfu, a creator who managed to transform color, light, and emotion into a personal artistic language.

A Self-Taught Artist with a Unique Vision

Curated by George Davlas, the exhibition highlights the journey of an artist who never conformed to the conventions of his era. Primarily self-taught, George Koulouris was born in Corfu in 1945 and later traveled to Paris, where he studied painting and engraving techniques, enriching his perspective without ever losing the authenticity of his personal expression.

The exhibition features watercolors and oil paintings mainly from the 1980s onwards, works that depict with particular sensitivity landscapes of Corfu, images of the city and countryside, as well as the characteristic female nudes that formed a central axis of his artistic career. In Koulouris’s world, the female body functions as a vehicle for emotion and freedom, while his gestural brushstrokes and atmospheric color contrasts reveal a painter who created more with instinct than with form.

A Significant and Multifaceted Artistic Journey

His career was substantial and multifaceted, with solo and group exhibitions in important cultural venues in Corfu and Athens. In 1998 and 1999, he taught at the School of Fine Arts and Modern Technology of the Technical University of Crete. Despite his significant presence in the art world, he always remained low-key, choosing to let his work speak for itself.

The exhibition at the Tscichritzis Visual Arts Foundation is not only a retrospective of his artistic journey but also a rare opportunity for the public to discover a creator who rendered Corfu as memory, emotion, and an internal landscape – far from any tourist representation. He was a painter who managed to capture silence, femininity, and light in a deeply poetic and timelessly contemporary way.
