South Corfu Absent from New European Funding Plans, Opposition Claims
Corfu, May 22 – Alexandros Alexakis, head of the ‘New Start’ faction, has raised concerns in the Municipal Council regarding the strategic planning for new European resources. He claims that South Corfu is notably absent from the planning for funds from the ‘Ionian Islands 2021-2027’ program, accusing the Municipal Authority of ‘dangerous administrative inadequacy’ and a lack of participation in critical funding processes for infrastructure projects.
The issue of absorbing European funds is expected to dominate the next regular meeting of the South Corfu Municipal Council on May 25. Alexakis, through an official motion, holds the Municipal Authority accountable, arguing that the municipality remains a spectator to developments concerning the ‘Ionian Islands 2021-2027’ Regional Program.
Lack of Preparedness and Strategic Planning
According to Mr. Alexakis, while other municipalities in the Region are holding working meetings and planning projects for school infrastructure, water supply, energy upgrades, and civil protection, South Corfu is experiencing complete inaction. The criticism focuses on the lack of mature studies, which are a prerequisite for integrating projects into funding instruments.
The ‘New Start’ faction emphasizes that the absence of strategy and planning is not merely a political weakness but a situation with a direct impact on the quality of life of citizens. The criticism intensifies with the observation that the municipality is consumed by daily management, lacking a developmental vision or an assertive presence in major funding programs.
As stated in the motion, the need to submit ‘fully mature project studies’ requires technical preparation and inter-departmental cooperation, elements that, according to the opposition, are absent from the current administration. The ‘administrative inadequacy,’ as it is characterized, translates into lost funding and projects that the new generation of the region is deprived of.
Demands for Transparency and Action
In order to clarify the intentions and readiness of the Municipality, Mr. Alexakis demands the immediate presentation of specific data to the Municipal Council. Among the requests is the submission of a complete list of mature studies that the Municipality intends to submit, as well as an update on contacts made with the Ionian Islands Region.
At the same time, the formation of a development priorities plan with clear timetables is requested. The aim of the intervention is to end the ‘politics of silence’ and initiate a meaningful public dialogue on the future of South Corfu, with the opposition warning that the region cannot afford another lost period of inaction.
Wider Context of Local Governance in Corfu
This situation in South Corfu is not isolated. Across the island, various local governance challenges are being highlighted. For instance, recent reports from Corfu TV News, dated May 22, 2026, point to a number of pressing issues. These include the ‘non-existent public toilets in the city center,’ a problem that impacts both residents and the significant tourist population. Another persistent concern highlighted is the ‘timeless problem with garbage at Pentofanaro,’ indicating ongoing waste management difficulties.
Furthermore, there are reports of resignations from the Catering Association on May 22, 2026, suggesting potential dissatisfaction or operational challenges within the local business community. These various issues collectively paint a picture of a region grappling with fundamental infrastructure and service delivery challenges, which could be exacerbated by a perceived lack of engagement with European funding opportunities.
The upcoming Municipal Council meeting on May 25 is therefore poised to be a crucial platform for addressing these concerns and potentially charting a new course for South Corfu’s development.
