Athens, May 20 – Athens Photo World (APW) 2026 is once again transforming the public spaces of Athens into an open-air photography scene with two major outdoor exhibitions and an open party in the city center. The exhibitions, running from May 29, 2026, will engage residents and visitors with themes of history, sports, and contemporary Greek identity.

Two Major Outdoor Exhibitions Launched

The two main exhibitions are:

  • “World Cup Stories” from the Associated Press Archive: Running from May 29 to July 31, 2026, at the National Garden fence.
  • “Mitos, the Thread of Greece” by Michalis Pappas: Running from May 29 to August 31, 2026, at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Mousikis Athinon) fence.

For another year, the fences of the National Garden and the Athens Concert Hall are being transformed into accessible open galleries, inviting residents and visitors to a unique photographic experience within the urban fabric.

“World Cup Stories”: A Retrospective of Football History

From May 29 to July 31, Athens Photo World presents “World Cup Stories in Pictures / Associated Press” at the National Garden. This large outdoor retrospective chronicles the history of the planet’s top football event, coinciding with this year’s FIFA World Cup.

The exhibition features 121 iconic photographs from the archives of the international news agency Associated Press, capturing historical moments from 1950 to the present. These images have been etched into the collective memory of millions of fans. Along Vassilissis Sofias and Amalias avenues, 48 large-format frames highlight the emotion, intensity, victory, defeat, and moments that transcended the boundaries of sport to become global cultural symbols. It’s an open experience of image and memory, available to every passerby, at all hours of the day.

To mark the opening of the exhibition at the National Garden, Athens Photo World’s social media channels will host, starting May 29, a special series dedicated to the “little stories of the World Cup.” Leading sports journalist Christos Sotirakopoulos will share daily unique narratives inspired by the iconic photographs from the Associated Press archive, shedding light on unknown moments, behind-the-scenes stories, and human tales behind the world’s greatest football tournament.

“Mitos, the Thread of Greece”: A Contemporary Look at Tradition

Concurrently, Athens Photo World returns for the seventh consecutive year to the fence of the Athens Concert Hall, presenting the photographic exhibition “Mitos, the Thread of Greece” by Michalis Pappas, from May 29 to August 31, 2026.

Through 13 selected images, Greek tradition is reintroduced through a contemporary photographic lens. Traditional costumes “come alive” on modern forms, creating a poetic narrative about the continuity, transformation, and timelessness of cultural heritage.

The long-standing collaboration between Athens Photo World and the Municipality of Athens continues to evolve, transforming photography into a vibrant public experience that unites residents, visitors, and different communities through the power of the image.

Opening Celebration with an Open Party

Athens Photo World is celebrating the launch of its summer exhibitions for 2026 with an open party for the public, in collaboration with the This is Athens City Festival of the Municipality of Athens and Athens Cocktails. The event will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 7:00 PM, at Stoa Culture, the emblematic cultural space in the heart of Athens.
