Helleniq Energy Accelerates Ionian Sea Drilling, Corfu Exploration Expected Late 2026

Corfu, Greece – Helleniq Energy has announced an accelerated timeline for its exploratory drilling operations in the Ionian Sea, specifically in the area west of Corfu. The drilling is now projected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, significantly earlier than the previously scheduled February 2027. This development was revealed during the company’s first-quarter financial results briefing to analysts.

Ionian Sea Drilling: A Key Focus for Helleniq Energy

Andreas Siamisiis, CEO of Helleniq Energy, stated, “We are committed to proceeding with the drilling in the Northern Ionian, west of Corfu, which will take place either in the fourth quarter of this year or the first quarter of next. Then we will know if there is anything worth investigating further.” This statement underscores the company’s strategic focus on this region. The exploratory consortium includes Energean and ExxonMobil, highlighting the significant international interest in the potential hydrocarbon reserves in the area.

Restructuring of Crete Blocks and Seismic Surveys

Regarding the offshore blocks of Crete, where Helleniq Energy operates alongside Chevron, Mr. Siamisiis indicated a portfolio restructuring. This adjustment considers the developments in the Ionian drilling project and the addition of new blocks south of the island. Consequently, over the next two years, emphasis will be placed on the block southwest of Crete. The block west of Crete will not undergo further exploration, while seismic surveys south of Crete are set to proceed in the coming quarters.

Financial Outlook: Strong Q2 Expected Despite Fuel Demand Drop

The management anticipates that the second quarter of the year will demonstrate even stronger performance, despite an expected decrease in demand for motor fuels due to rising prices. “Greece has not experienced a significant reduction in demand. There is a small drop in April volumes, and we expect to see what happens in May, but with everything going on, a single-digit drop in fuel demand is expected,” Mr. Siamisiis explained. He further added, “We also expect to see how tourist traffic develops, which is an important period of the year for us.”

The company’s management estimates that operating profits will remain close to the first-quarter levels, approximately 400 million euros, attributed to the favorable international economic environment. For the entire year, an improvement of 10-30% compared to 2025 is projected. This figure will depend on developments in the Gulf region and the investment budget, which is expected to be lower than last year, unless acquisitions in the renewable energy sector materialize.

Impact on Local Economy and Environment

The acceleration of drilling operations in the Ionian Sea could have significant implications for the local economy of Corfu and the broader region. While promising potential energy independence and economic benefits, such activities also raise environmental concerns among local communities and environmental organizations. The thoroughness of the exploratory phase will be crucial in determining the viability and environmental impact of any future extraction.

Local authorities and environmental groups in Corfu are expected to closely monitor the developments, advocating for stringent environmental protection measures throughout the exploration and potential extraction processes. The economic benefits, if any, would need to be carefully weighed against potential ecological risks to the pristine Ionian marine ecosystem.

The current energy landscape and geopolitical developments have placed a renewed focus on domestic energy sources, making Helleniq Energy’s exploration efforts particularly timely. The company’s commitment to transparency and adherence to international best practices will be vital in navigating the complexities of offshore drilling.
