North Corfu Municipality and Ionian Islands Region Governor Hold Crucial Working Meeting for Post-Disaster Recovery
Corfu, Greece – A significant working meeting was held yesterday, May 15, 2026, between the Mayor of North Corfu, Mr. Giorgos Machimaros, and the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Mr. Ioannis Trepekli. The meeting, which took place at the Municipality’s headquarters in Acharavi, was attended by the entire Municipal Authority and service executives from both the Ionian Islands Region and the North Corfu Municipality. The discussions were characterized by a highly substantive and constructive atmosphere, focusing on critical issues affecting the local communities.
Addressing the Aftermath of Disasters: Fires and Extreme Weather Events
The primary agenda item was the severe and ongoing consequences faced by local communities following the devastating fire in 2023 in the Loutses area, as well as the extreme weather phenomena of November 2025 and February 2026. The Municipal Authority underscored the critical need for immediate support and acceleration of procedures for projects and interventions concerning the daily lives, safety, and quality of life of citizens. The Regional Governor listened intently to the positions and proposals of the Municipal Authority, and an extensive discussion ensued regarding the utilization of financial tools and programs to address these challenges.
