Athens, May 14 – Greece is nearing an 80 percent renewal of the bus fleet in Athens, a significant milestone in the largest modernization of the city’s public transport network in decades. Alternate Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis announced that with the addition of 205 more buses expected to enter service soon, the total number of new vehicles will reach 1,076.
Significant Additions to the Fleet
The latest additions to Athens’ public transport fleet include 125 electric buses, 13 IVECO natural gas buses, and 67 new Menarini CNG buses. These vehicles join the 871 new units already serving passengers across the city, significantly upgrading the network.
Kyranakis highlighted the dramatic shift from 2019, when the city’s bus network heavily relied on vehicles manufactured in 1999. Today, more than one-third of the new fleet is electric, and another third runs on natural gas, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable urban mobility.
Driver Recruitment and Improved Frequencies
In addition to fleet modernization, the Greek Transport Ministry is actively pursuing a new driver recruitment initiative. For the first time, applicants without a professional driving license will be eligible to apply, with free training provided through the OSY driving school. This initiative aims to address staffing needs and ensure efficient operation of the expanded fleet.
According to Kyranakis, a key objective is to improve frequencies on major bus routes by up to 50 percent by the end of 2026. He noted that waiting times on several lines have already been reduced from approximately 18 minutes to 8-9 minutes, enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Future Expansion and Funding
The modernization efforts are set to continue through 2028, with plans to add another 617 buses. These further additions will be funded through a combination of European and national programs, with the ultimate goal of expanding Athens’ active fleet to over 2,000 vehicles. This ongoing investment underscores the long-term vision for a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport system in the Greek capital.
The comprehensive renewal program is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility in Athens, providing residents and visitors with more reliable, comfortable, and sustainable transportation options.
