OFI Water Polo Team Loses to Corfu, to Fight for Bronze Medal

Corfu, May 10 – The OFI water polo team was defeated 12-11 by Corfu in a highly contested match, with the Cretan team expressing significant complaints about the refereeing. The game, which took place yesterday evening, saw OFI fall short of reaching the Water Polo League 2 final.

Controversial Defeat and Referee Complaints

The team from Heraklion described the loss as unjust, believing that their performance in Corfu warranted a spot in the final. Despite the outcome, OFI will now shift its focus to securing a medal by competing for third and fourth place, a goal that has been part of their objectives since the beginning of the season.

OFI’s coach, Kostas Fitsanakis, stated after the game: “The boys played like heroes, and their performance was excellent. However, many things are beyond our control. I believe we deserved to be in the final. Now we will play for the medal, which has been one of our goals from the start of the season.”

Match Details and Team Performance

The quarter scores were 3-3, 2-2, 3-4, and 4-2, indicating a closely fought battle throughout the game. The OFI team roster included: Tsavolakis, Papanikolaou (3 goals), Leontarakis, Klimos, Tsiakanikos (1 goal), Tsagkarakis (2 goals), Vasilakis, Vythoulkas (1 goal), Zouraffis (2 goals), Aronis, Patounas (1 goal), Gartaganis, Pakioufakis, and Pavlostathis (1 goal).

Looking Ahead: The Fight for Bronze

Despite the disappointment of missing the final, the team remains determined to achieve a medal. This season has been noted as exceptional for OFI, and securing a bronze would be a significant accomplishment. The focus now shifts to the upcoming match for third place, where OFI will aim to conclude their impressive season with a podium finish.

This event highlights the competitive nature of Water Polo League 2 and the passion exhibited by the OFI team and its coaching staff.
